SPRING VALLEY — While many flag football teams that go winless through their opening league contests begin drifting out of contention, El Cajon Valley is moving in the opposite direction.

Following an upset loss to previously winless Valhalla in Grossmont Valley League action, the Braves climbed back into the title hunt with a pair of victories during Week Eight.

First, ECVHS matched the program record for the largest margin in a shutout victory by blanking Monte Vista, 18-0, on Tuesday (Sept. 29). Two days later, preseason favorite West Hills became the Braves’ next victim in a 13-7 victory over the Wolf Pack.

Thus, the standings have become a jumbled mess.

El Cajon Valley (7-7 overall) sits in the middle of the table with a 3-3 league record.

West Hills (5-5) remains on top at 3-1, but it was a rough week for the Wolf Pack, who lost at home to both Christian in non-league play and El Cajon Valley. Santana (5-7) sits a half-game back at 2-1.

Valhalla and Monte Vista are positioned just below the Braves.

All of Monte Vista’s league games have been removed from the schedules of the other five GVL programs, so something apparently happened behind the scenes. The contests involving the Monarchs now appear to be classified as non-league games.

Monte Vista later fell to Valhalla, 27-12, leaving the Norsemen tied with El Cajon Valley in the standings.

EL CAJON — El Capitan, after allowing a season-high 33 points to Steele Canyon, continued its defensive slump when Granite Hills scored 41 points in a Grossmont Hills League victory at Valley Stadium.

The Vaqueros’ receptions leader was Gabriella Jackson, who matched her season high with 10 catches, totaling 112 yards. Jackson previously registered 10 receptions against Ramona.

El Capitan (6-8 overall) attempted only one rushing play, with Bonner scrambling for a 7-yard gain.
