SPRING VALLEY – Steele Canyon showcased all its gridiron wares on both sides of the line of scrimmage in a 40-0 rout on Monte Vista Friday night in Spring Valley.

Senior PIERRE ALEXANDER had a 25-yard TD for his first of two TDs on the night, as the Cougars lead the Monarchs, 7-0 early.

Steele Canyon’s COLTON LARCEVAL and WAYNE BARELA combined on a sack in the first quarter to set up a change of possession, which led to MALCOLM ANDERS’ TD run from 30 yards out. Anders darted left of his line and then burst past four defenders to reach the end zone.

Later in the game, quarterback THOMAS FISHBURNE hit MIKEL OLIVER with a short pass following a roll out to the right, but Oliver turned in a Herculean-type effort to escape the grasp of nearly every Monte Vista defender to cover the final 20 yards into the end zone for a 41-yard score.

Anders carried 13 times for 136 yards, while Alexander finished with 51 yards on just three carries. SEAN TODD added a 23-yard run for the Cougars (1-1). Fishburne accounted for 76 yards of total offense.

The Cougars were led on the offensive front by NICK SALAZAR, CALEB O’GORMAN, KYREE WOODS and JUSTIN NAM.

Steele Canyon’s defense limited Monte Vista to just 105 yards of total offense. Safety AUGUST MANSHEIM, a junior, had an interception and return for 13 yards. Also, leading the Wall of Steele were DAVID PANGELINAN, SEAN MILLER and CARTER CANEDY.

JALONTAE JONES had 34 yards on 13 carries to lead the Monarchs on offense, while teammate DANIEL CONTRERAS added a 17-yard run. ADERO JOHNSON caught two passes for 31 yards for Monte Vista.

The early blowout necessitated the use of a running clock in the second half.

One bugaboo for the Cougs was a terrible night in terms of execution, drawing 11 penalties.
