EL CAJON – Highlights from Grossmont Conference football action for Week 11 (Oct. 27-28), the final week of the regular season:
MOUNT MIGUEL 48, MONTE VISTA 0
In 2011, Mount Miguel won 56-0, starting a string of three consecutive league titles. Mount Miguel hadn’t won a league crown since until Friday’s (Oct. 27) triumph.
The Matadors (9-1 overall, 4-0 GVL) complete the regular season with their best mark since 1987 (11-1) when they went a perfect 10-0, then added a CIF playoff win over Fallbrook to go 11-0 before falling in the CIF San Diego Section semifinals to their immediate neighbors to the west, the Morse Tigers.
The school record for victories in a single-season is also the 87 Matadors, as oe of the favorites to gain a top seed in their division in postseason play — including a high placement in their division of the CIF state rankings — lofty expectations are rising.
Also, the Matadors record was set for single-season scoring. entering the ballgame a few points short opf the 2009 club that scored 403 points, this year’s edition now stands at 450 points with at least one CIF postseason game still to be played.
Mount Miguel is expected tpo be the top seed in Division IV, gaining a first-round bye.
WEST HILLS 14, SANTANA 0
The 15-yard passing touchdown came after less than four minutes of play following the opening kickoff . The Pack added an insurance TD on a 3-yard rush in the final moments of the fourth quarter.
The decision clinched a fourth-place finish and a winning recoerd for the season by the Pack (6-4 overall, 2-3 GHL) in their debut return to the grossmont Hills League.
Santana (4-6 overall) went winless over five GHL contests, getting shutout in the series for the first-time ever. The schools first met in 1989 (the Sultans took the debut clash, 42-2, missing the shutout on a safety).
The previous low was also a 14-0 West Hills victory, coming in 2002 against Grossmont.
EL CAPITAN 31, EL CAJON VALLEY 28
El Capitan (6-4 overall, 3-1 GVL) clinched another winning record as head coach Ron Burner — noq in hia `9th season — enters the postseason with a career record of 110-97-2.
For the Braves, quarterback Darick Dubose completed just six passes, yet two went for touchdowns to keep the Braves in contention all contest. Inlcuded was an 84-yard bomb to Paris Dixon (Sr), while Chris Cosio led with three receptions and a 38-yard TD. All three are seniors.
Meanwhile, senior Dubose rushed 16 times for a career-best 180 yards, including a burst of 92 yards for the other Braves score.
ECVHS falls to 5-5 overall (1-3 GVL).
PATRICK HENRY 27, CORONADO 14
CORONADO — The Patrick Henry Patriots erupted for three touchdowns in the opening 10 minutes, pasting the Coronado Islanders, 27-14, in Fridays (Oct. 27) City League contest held at Blumenthal Sports Complex stadium.
The Patriots mounted a 21-7 advantge through the first quarter before the defense for both sides took over.
The next scores didn’t arrive until the ofurth period, as Henry pushed the margin to 27-7 before a late score by the Island Boys.
The Patriots (5-5 overall, 2-3 City) to reache the .500 plateau with the win. Coronado falls to 3-7 following a winless league campaign.
