Barry’s Homecoming: a near upset of USD

West Hills High product Cam Barry, the all-time leading scorer in Grossmont Conference basketball history, almost single-handily led Sonoma State to an upset in the Seawolves debut against the University of San Diego.
Barry scored the game’s first nine points en route to his game-best 21 point, but the Division II school was nipped at the wire by the Toreros, 68-64, Tuesday (Nov. 7) at Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Barry — (follow him at @cambarry_3 — nailed a pair of three-pointers, then a short humper and a foul shot over the opening 2:41. The guard would tally 15 of Sonoma’s State’s first 25 points, as the Seawolves led 25-6 befoe mounting a 36-24 halftime advantage.
USD’s five starters combined fgor a mere 31 points to trail by as many as 19 points, but a superior bench
— led by the 13 points from Turner Deuce — fueled the comeback.
Sonoma State moved within twopoints in the final seconds, but a pair of late free throws with 8 second remaining gave te hosts the victory.
Fortunately for the Seawolves, as an NCAA Division II school, contests against D-1 programs are considered exhibitions, so they won’t official open their season until Friday at Academy of Arts in San Francisco.
Barry has also played college basketball at San Dieog Miramar CC and Cal State Dominguez Hill, where he averaged 12.5 ppg last season before transferring over the summer.
NoteL On its website, USD states they lead the series with Sonoma State, 2-0. However, that is only as a D-1 program. Historical records indicate that the Toreors actually trail the all-time series, 5-4.
