EL CAJON – It was a disappointing end to the respective sports seasons for several East County programs on Veterans Day Saturday (Nov. 11)

Girls Volleyball

LAKESIDE – The greatest season in El Capitan Vaqueros girls volleyball history came to a shocking end.

Leading in sets, 2-0, in the CIF State Championships, the Vaqeuros dropped their Southlandsemifinals match to Campbell Hall of North Hollywood iat Foster Gymnasium.

The Vikings (34-5) rallied for a 22-25,23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-10 triumph in a tie-braker.

El Capitan finished with a record of 29-9 — the school’s third consecutive campaign with 29 victories (29-11 in 2021; 29-12 in 2022).

During the ballclub’s successful run, they also went 31-13 in 2018-19, then went 9-0 in the COVID-19 shortened season.

This week’s three state postseason contests were coach by El Cap girls basketballl coach Dylan Curtis, who replaced Brennan Wong-Pau following the CIF San Diego Section finals setback to Francis parker.

The Vaqueros are the six0time Grossmont Hills League champions.

The loss to Campbell Hall also completed the prep careers of several seniors, including UC Santa Barbara bound outside hitter Madison Triplett, the Grossmont Conference all-time leader in kills.

The other graduating seniors include: setter and co-captain Ruby Ennis, libero (defensive specialist) Madison Liedecke,and another back-row player in Charlize Tatman (all pictured below).

FLETCHER HILLS – One of the most disappointing seasons in Grossmont College history saw the Griffins finish with an 0-10 record. But it was the who/what/hows which left people shaking their collective heads.
On Saturday (Nov. 11), in a contest between two schools both saddled with winless 0-9 records, Southwestern posted a fourth-quarter shutout towin, 45-31, at Mashin-Roth Memorial Stadium.

The visiting Jaguars (1-9 overall, 1-6 NCSD) tallieda season-best 23 points in the second quarter to overcome an early 7-0 deficit, then the SWC defense limited Grossmont to just a single second-haf touchdown.

They entered the contest with just two wins in their previous 25 games (dating back to 2021) — both to lowly San Bernardino Valley to avoid winless seasons.

While Grossmont’s history proudly boasts a pair of CCCAA state championships, this season’s results may rate among the poorest.

Ranked at the bottom may be the conclusion of the San Diego City College football program, when shut down following the 1993 season with 33 consecutive losses. The Knights’ last win: against Grossmont in 1990.
