FLETCHER HILLS — With one of their top recruits on the bench,the Grossmont College women’s basketball team looked dreary. With the shooting guard playing limited minutes, the ballclub looked better.
On Wednesday (Nov. 20, with freshman guard Pohainani “Pohai” Basso making her first significant action of the season, Grossmont transformed into a competitive club hat seeks to make a difference in the PacificCoast Athletic Conference race this season.
Basso poured in 26 points — the most by any Griffins player this season – as Grossmont (1-4 overall) cracked a mild skid to double-down on visiting College of the Desert, 84-41, to conclude a stretch against traditional South Coast Conference rivals from the 1970-80s. BOXSCORE
Basso shot 50 percent of her shots (8-of-16), including six goals fromthe 3-point line. The product out of City League champion University City, also led Grossmont with five assists.
Basso scored her 26 points in 36 minutes from off the bench. Meanwhile, Alana Brown added 10 points as a reserve.
Among the starters, the Griffins’ Brielle Gefrom posted 11 points, while Mia Maglalang and Janea Wilson each added 9 points.
