More shutouts, with Monarchs no-hitter

ELL CAJON – The recent trend toward shutouts continued Thursday (Jar, 15), with schools from smaller divisions also throwing blanks to opposing batters.
However, one team did better than all of the others over the past 48 hours after Monte Vista fired a no-hitter .
Monarchs senior David Rodriguez fired five solid innings, then aleb Taa Jones fired a 1-2-3 in the sixth inning before Lincoln raised the white plag in a cimbied no-hitter to down the host Hornets.
The only blemish by Rodriguez were a pair of walks while striking out five Lincoln batters.
On offense, Jacob Schweizer stroked a pair of doubles to collect four RBI. ustyn Stone andNiko Heidt — both seniors — drove home two runs each.
At the top of the batting order, Niko Heidt batted 3-for-3 with a walk, scorig all four times.
The ballgame was the Pacific League opener for Foothills Christian, while knocking Pacific Ridge (1-1 league) out of its share of first place with Escondido Charter.
Morgan allowed five hits, yet only faced 19 total batters as the Foothills Christian defense recorded a school record four double plays. First baseman Andrew Burke making the stretch to complete each play, while adding an RBI double.
Foothills Christian scored twice in the first and fourth innings. Also driving hoem runs were freshmen Josh Howard and Trevor Cochrum, allowing the Knights (5-3 overall) to snap a mild, 2-game losiing skid.
The big blow was a bases-loaded , three-run double by Junior Ettleman. Meanwhile, James Cibrian and Alex Sandavol added two RBI each as seven Matadors drove in runs.
Matt Barton and Sandoval fihsed with three hits each, making a winner of starting pitcher Matt Barton (5 IP).
