74th annual Lions Tournament
Wed., Mar. 27 – Day 3
The Knights (10-6 overall) became the firsty ast County squad to reach 10 victories, talied six times in the seventh inning to steal the title-game berth from the Matadors (9-4), which saw their 9-game winning streak snapped.
The entire Foothills Christian contributed to the comeback, with six different Knightys driving in runs, including a pair each by NAndrew Burke, Jeremy Saucedo and freshman Trevor Cochrum.
Cochrum also paced the ballclub with three hits and two runs scored.
Despite 5.innings from “Captain” Jack Morgan, who struck out six Matadors batters, he escaped the loss by the rally. Instead, Josh Howard, another frosh, gained the victory by allowing just one ht over the final 1.2 frames.
Mount Miguel once trailed 2-0, yet held a 6-4 advantage through six innings.
Jeremiah Castillo was the hitting standout with a pair of doubles among his three hits, good for three RBI.
Xavier Reyes added three hits, including a 2-run double.
One major difference came onthe bases. Although the Matadors displayed their usual speed with four stolen bases, the Knghts collected eight thefts to help fuel the late rally.
The Monarchs posted six runs in the second inning, then two more markers in the third before allowing the reserves to see actions.
The early siege was led by Gavin Daley, who drove in three runs with a home run and a double among three hitsfor the third0year varsity performer.
Another senior, David Aceron, added two hits for two RBI.
Daley (4-1) also pitched a complete-game 3-hitter with seven Ks for his fourth straght victory.
Landon Harbach delivered the deciding blow with a two-run double,
Andrew Conyers and Dominic Jones each added two hits.
El Capitan (9-5 overall) went 2-1 in its pool
The early advantage included a solo home run by the Scotties’ Kris Jones. while Gabe Lanier knocked home the other two runs.
Highlanders starting pitcher Lincoln L. Wirschem came within two outs of a complete gamein his 3-hitter. Gabe Lanier retired the two batters he faced to register the save.
Helix (6-7 overall) went 2-1 in pool play, with an opportunity to reach .500in Thursday’s third-place consolation contest.
The Island “Kuhunas” fell to 9-5.
The Braves (7-4 overall) went 2-1 in tournament pool play and will play a consolation third-place contest on Thursday.
Torrey Pines 3, Granite Hills 0 – In a battle of Top 10 ballclubs in the CIF San Diego Section, Torrey Pines pitcher Brendon Miller fired a 3-shit shutout at host Granite Hills.
Miller struck out three Eagles and walked a pair, but only faced 23 batters after the Falcons defense turned a air of doubleplays, while another runner was caught stealing.
Santa Fe Christian 12, Steele Canyon 10 –– At Solana Beach, both sides were obviously out of pitching when the host Eagles — formerly the Navigators until the mid-1990s — tok a 5-3 lead through the first inning.
Fourruns in SFCS in the fourth finally doomed the Cougars (4-9), which went winless in the Lions Tournament toextend their losing skid to six contests.
Greyson Tamborski registered two RBI and scored twice for Steele Canyon.
Broomfield (Colo.) 10, West Hills 0 – The Broomfield Eagles, located about 40 milesnorth of Denver, scored fourtimes in the first and fifth innings to sueprise West Hills, 10-0, at Wolf Pack Park.
The setback prevented West Hills (5-7 overall) from gaining a Lions Tournamwnt finals berth in its division.
Broomfield pitcher Ethan Zufall lasted 4.1 innings, recording 10 of his 13 outs on strikes for the win. Three Eagles combined on a 3-hitter with 13 Ks.
