Sweeney: 3 HRs in Opener; other records
FLETCHER HILLS -Grossmont College first baseman Michael “M.H.” Sweeney powered a school record-tying three home runs in Thursday’s (Apr 18) first game of a double header, lifting the Griffins to a sweep of Imperial Valley College at Noel Michelson Field.
Including a near-record seven RBI in the opener,, part of an 8 RBI performance on the day, as Grossmont swept the Arabs, 15-4 and 17-10, with the first contest called following 8 innings.
Sweeney, a 6-foot-8 freshman out of St. Augustine High, pushed his season batting average to above the .350 mark after going 5-for-8 in the sweep.
The left-handed hitter rocketed qa 3-run shot to open the scoring in the first inning, then followed wsith a 2-run shot in the second.
However, with IVC pitching around him, Sweeney went deep to left field on an outside pitch the sixth for two additional RBI.The homer came moments after third baseman Sebastian Granados (3-for-4, 3 RBI) also went deep to left for his second long-ball of the contest.
Griffins shortstop Nevan Noonan, the leadoff batter, also drove in three runs by batting 3-for-6.
In the second game, Grossmont came back from a 5-3 deficit with four runs in the third, then five more in the sixth to rally.
Center fielder Hayden Tregidga finished with five RBI, one short of his career-best set against Palomar earlier n the month. Tregidga raised his batting batting average to .319; Sweeney is at .355 entering the finalweek of the regular season.
In addition, sophomore catcher Cole Duffy equaled a school mark with three sacrifices, putting down a successful bunt and a pair of fly balls to drive in runs.

IMPERIAL – Grossmont College shortstop Nevan Noonan slammed an RBI double to break a 5-all tie in the ninth inning, as the Griffins went on to defeat host Ipmpieral Valley College, 7-5, in Pacific Coast Athletic Conference action.
The hit was clutch, but it also took some hustle by the bottom of the Grossmont batting order to create the positive results.
IVC lost a fly ball in the sun, which was gloved yet dropped for an error. Such plays often happen in Imperial County, but it wads the following play which set up the winning stroke.
Nevan Noonan
No. 8 batter Ryland Humphries hustled down the first-base line and was safe in avoiding a double play. so even though the No. 9 batter made out for the second rather than third out, the hustle allowed Grossmont to turn over its batting order to set up Nonman;s heroics.
The Griffins (13-20 overall) moved to within one game in the win column of San Diego Mesa for fourth place in the PCAC standings.

FLETCHER HILLS – Former Santana High pitcher Madison Mendez fired a 2-hit shutout and drove in the game’s lone run in the third inning, pacing Southwestern College to a 2-1 decision over Grossmont College in Wednesday’s (Apr. 17) Pacific CoastAthletic Conference softball contest.
The victory allowed the Jaguars to escdape with the season series, 2-1.
Mendez struck out three Griffins batters, getting the majority of her outs on grounders. Meanwhile, Mendez’ one-out single in thethirs allowed center fielder Daniela Sandez (safe on error) to score an unearned run.
The hard-luck loser was Gracie Johnston despite six strike outs in her 4-hit effort.
