Patriots Show Who’s Boss In City Eastern

EL CAJON – A pair of home runs and multiple players with multiple hits propel the Christian Patriots to the 8-2 victory over Point Loma in a battle for first place in City Eastern League action Wednesday afternoon.

Christian early on would take advantage of a pair of opportunities that included a miscue by the Pointers and an RBI single by Kaitlyn Moody (2-3, R, 2 RBI, HR) which gave them a 2-0 lead.

Point Loma would answer with a run in the top of the second inning as Ryoko Schroth belted a solo home run to left field to make it 2-1.

However, the Patriots would go onto extend their lead when Lucy Sherburne (2-3, R, 3 RBI, 2 SB, HR) hit a two-run homer to center-field for her third of the season bringing in Tyler Krystek (2-3, 3 R, 2B) to push the score to 4-1 and with two outs Moody added another run with her fifth home run of the season a solo shot to center field to make it 5-1.

Later the Patriots would extend the lead even further thanks to Sherburne who knocked in Giselle Colmenero (1-3, R) which made it 6-1 which was followed by an RBI double by Ashley Wood (1-2, 2 R, RBI, 2B) that brought home Krystek and later Sammy Baca (1-4, RBI) with two outs drove in Wood to make it 8-1.

Pitching wise Patriots starter Ava Barrios improved her pitching record to 12-3 in going five innings while allowing one run on six hits in which she walked one and struck out two. Sienna Staite came in and tossed two innings of relief allowing one run on two hits while walking two and striking out one.

Records-wise after the first round of league play the Christian Patriots who are now 17-5-1 overall and 4-0 in league sit in first place while Point Loma falls to 12-7 overall and 3-1 in league and sits alone in second place.

CITY WESTERN LEAGUE

PATRICK HENRY 6, CLAIREMONT 3 – Thanks to a hot bat by Belle Will the Patrick Henry Patriots were able to double up the Clairemont Chieftains Wednesday afternoon in City Western action.

Will on the day at the plate singled in the fifth, fourth, and seventh innings as well as scoring a pair of runs and also driving in two runs in her 3-for-4 day at the plate.

Patrick Henry would open up the scoring thanks to a sacrifice fly by McKenna Gieger (R, RBI, SB) that would allow Izzy Ervin (2-4, 2 R, 2B) who led off the inning to race home to make it 1-0.

However, the Chieftains would take advantage of an error by the Patriots to push across the tying run to tie the score 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning.

Another sacrifice fly by the Patriots this time Sophia Sanchez was able to drive home Brooke Taylor (R, 2 SB) to make it 2-1.

Leading by the one run Patrick Henry would give themselves some breathing room in the top of the fifth inning as they scored three more runs.

Will would drive in both Ervin and Geiger and Zoe Rutherford (2-3, RBI) would drive in Will which made it 5-1. They would add on another run in the top of the seventh inning.

Rutherford would earn the victory for the Patriots. The lefty allowed three runs on four hits over six innings in which she fanned five.

Patrick Henry with the win moves to 13-9 overall and 2-2 in league play and sole possession of third place after the first round of league while Clairemont falls to 8-9-1 overall and 0-4 and in last place in league.
