Helix WR Wooden signs with Falcons

Isaiah Wooden

ATLANTA – Isaiah Wooden, the former Helix High standout who played his collegiate ball at Southern Utah, has agreed to terms to sign with the NFL Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent.

At 5-foot-9 qned 175 pounds, many believed Wooden to be an undersized receiver and thus was ignored in the draft. However, as a pre-snap motion with good speed, could well fit into the Falcons offense with his ability to beat press coverage.

Because of Wooden’s smaller frame, the Falcons elected to take Illinois receiver Casey Washington in the sixth round, believeing no one would name Wooden. Now the Falconsd can have both speedsters should they both be successful at training camp.

Wasington played inthe shadows of Fighting Illini teammate Isaiah Williams, yet was the lone Illios wide-out to get drafted.

This made the Falcons’ earlier picks in the draft even more questionable — most media outlets reported Atlanta was the poorest draft among the 32 clubs in the NFL.

If this proves true, Wooden may possess a better opportunity to make the roster than many would previously have believed.

Playing for the Thunderbrds in 2003, Wooden caught 61 passes for 904 yards in all 11 contests, including 14 touchdowns with a long off 66 yards.

Wooden spent five years in Cedar City, Utah, after transferrin from Kent State.

“Isaiah is a great player on the field and an even better person off of it. He has worked extremely hard for this opportunity,” said SUU head coach DeLane Fitzgerald. “Our coaching staff, players, and university couldn’t be happier for Isaiah.”
