WEEK 14
May 28-June 6

Eric Krause
ERIC KRAUSE, Granite Hills
Krause, a senior, tossed a complete-game victory in stopping Mira Mesa in the CIF Division I semifinals, then got the Eagles out of a major jam in the 5th inning of the championship contest against Torrey Pines, tossing the final 2 2/3 innings to earn his fifth save to lead Granite Hills to its first title in 9 seasons. He registered the final out by snaring a hard line drive headed for his face in a dramatic ending to the televised ballgame. Krause was lated named East County player of the year, earning a first-team berth to the San Diegp Hall of Champions' All-CIFSDS team.

SAM BEASLEY, Steele Canyon
Beasley, a senior pitcher, capped her season by bombing three home runs in the CIF Division III semifinals and pitching a shutout in the title game, leading the Cougars to a secon straight San Diego Section title. Beasley, who is headed for San Diego State, was later named Grossmont South League player of the year, East County player of the year, and the San Diego Section player of the year (for all division) by the San Diego Hall of Champions.

RANDY PEREZ, Helix
Perez, a senior shortstop, did his job at the top of the Highlanders batting order, batting .462 in four CIF playoff contests for the week. Included were three multi-hit efforts, two in victories over Castle Park and Westview, then two of the Scotties' three hits in an elimination setback to Oceanside. Perez also scored twice in each of those game, plus collected four RBI in four postseason ballgames.

Kylee Krings

KYLEE KRINGS, West Hills
Krings, a senior facing three must-win situations, collected the pitching victory in every ballgame last week to give West Hills a share of the Grossmont North League championship. Along with a complete-game, no-hitter over El Cajon Valley, she twice entered in relief to shutdown the opposition in downing Grossmont, then Santana on the final day of the regular season, raising her season record to 11-2.

JOHN FERREIRA, Christian
Ferreira clinched a perfect 10-0 Central League slate by the Patriots, pitching a complete game and garnering the game-winning RBI in the regular season finale against second-place Madison. On the mound, Ferreira allowed just five hits and one earned run, then at the plate, he went a perfect 4-for-4, including an RBI single in the 2nd to give Christian the lead in an 8-3 triumph. Andrea Nedden

ANDREA NEDDEN, Grossmont
Nedden, a senior, owns the hottest bat for power in the East County over the past three weeks -- and in the clutch, too, providing the game-winning hit in each of the Foothillers' victories last week to post a perfect 3-0 mark. Against El Capitan, a two-run triple broke a scoreless contest in the 5th in a 7-2 victory. Against El Cajon Valley, she stroked RBI singles in the 1st and 2nd to jumpstart the Hillers to a 7-3 triumph, then in a non-league affair at Otay Ranch, Nedden drove home the game's only run with a triple in the 8th inning.


Jordan Hindi

JORDAN HINDI, Steele Canyon
Hindi, the Cougars' junior left-fielder, was the best player on the best team last week, as Steele Canyon swept three straight contests, capped by an 8-5 uncorking of top0-ranked Granite Hills. Hindi batted .769 (10-for-13) for the week, including 11 RBI and six runs scored. Hindi started the week with a 3-for-5 outing against Valhalla, then went 3-for-3 against Monte Vista, gaining half of his 6 RBI on his 1st homer of the season -- a 3-run bomb. Then against the Eagles, Hindi batted 4-for-5 with three addition RBI in an 8-5 triumph.

Bobby Wilkins

BOBBY WILKINS, Valhalla
Wilkins, a senior right-hander, has the best of Valhalla's five strong pitching performances, as the Norsemen posted a rare 5-0 record for the week. Pitching against Helix, Wilkins tossed a 3-hit shutout, striking out 10 batters. The staff allowed just 9 earned runs all week in downing Monte Vista and Steele Canyon twice each, along with Wilkiin's topping of the Highlanders.

Kelsey McIlonie

KELSEY McILONIE, Santana
McIlonie, a junior third baseman, was in the middle of three Sultans victories last week, launching her team into undisputed possession of first place in the Grossmont North League. On Monday, McIlonie was credited with the game-winning RBI in a 2-1 triumph over Grossmont, then the next day bombed a 2-run in a 3-2 decision over West Hills in a showdown of undefeated league leaders. K-Mac capped a productive week of driving home runs with a sacrifice fly in a 6-1 win at El Capitan.

ERIC KRAUSE, Granite Hills
TAYLOR WOHLWEND, Grossmont

In one-on-one matchups to determine leadership in both Grossmont Conference leagues, Krause and Wohlwend each tossed 2-hitters to lift their respective teams to the top of the table.

On Wednesday, Krause improved his East County best record to 7-1 by blanking Valhalla, 5-0, extending his scoreless streak to 26 2/3 innings -- the second-best ever in the region. Krause struckout 10 Norsemen.

On Friday, it was Wohlwend's turn, striking out 11 El Capitan batters in a 4-1 decision. The run was unearned. He also pitched 2 2/3 innings of no-hit relief with 6 strikeouts to gain the victory over El Cajon Valley.

WEEK 8
Apr. 16-21

Jessie Owens
JESSIE OWENS, Christian
Owens spun a 1-hitter to lead the Patriots past Serra, then entered in relief to collect a save against Morse, moving Christian into a 3-way tie for second place in the Eastern League. Owens also batted 3-for-4 in each contest to finish 6-for-8 (.750) for the week, including three RBI against Morse.

GREG GARCIA, Valhalla
Along with a perfect week without an error on defense at second base, Garcia was hot with the bat, recording three RBI in both outings. Included was a 3-run homer -- his 4th of the season -- on Monday, then a 2-run double to cap a 2-for-5 week, plus three walks, five runs and the six RBI.

CHRISTINE JACOBITES, Helix
Jacobites tossed her second straight shutout in tossing a 3-hitter at Point Loma in Monday's 1-0 triumph, then came back with six shutout innings against Serra in a 3-2 victory, giving the Highlanders a sweep last week and extending the Highlanders' winning streak to four. Included was a 14 strikeout performance against the Q's on Friday (Apr. 13).

Travis Taijeron
TRAVIS TAIJERON, Granite Hills
Taijeron was named to the all-tournament team at the Phil Nevin National Classic, leading the Eagles to a 3-1 record and a third-place finish. Taijeron batted .545 (6-for-11) with 2 homers, a pair of doubles, 7 RBI and 5 runs scored. He even chipped in a sacrifice fly in the final round, a 4-3 victory over Esperanza.

Taylor Eichhorst

TAYLOR EICHHORST, Christian
Eichhorst, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound sophomore, moved the Patriots to within a game of the championship round of the Lions Tournament. Included was a 2-for-2, two RBI performance against Colony, a double and a game-winning RBI single to defeat Imperial, then he extended his hitting streak to 11 ballgames in a setback to San Ysidro. Eichhorst's batting avearge is now nearing .500 for the season.


Brittani Bertussi

BRITTANI BERTUSSI & NICOLE RIVERA, Granite Hills
Bertussi was named Pitcher of the Tournament, while Rivera was tabbed Player of the Tournament, as the Eagles swept the championship round of the Falcon Fiesta by upsetting both top-ranked Patrick Henry and No.7 Steele Canyon to win the school's first title in more than a decade.

SHARLANA BURNER, West Hills
Burner, a senior, paced the Wolf Pack to the Grossmont Conference Tournament title, as West Hills swept five pool play contests, then downed Steele Canyon , 4-1, in the championship contest. Burner batted .667 in last week's three victories, including a 5-for-5 performance against Helix to equal the school record. She also scored five times and stole a pair of bases, helping extend the ballclub's win streak to seven.

Ryan O'Sullivan
RYAN O'SULLIVAN, Valhalla
O'Sullivan, a junior, ranked as the most consistent Norsemen last week in leading his team to the Grossmont Conference Tournament title. Although he only batted .222 (2-for-9) for the week, he found ways to produce runs, collecting six RBI, including the game-winner in a 4-3 come-from-behind effort to defeat Grossmont. O'Sullivan pitched the final two innings for the win, then made his regular start against El Capitan , striking out five to gain another victory. The shortstop (when not pitching) added two RBI in the 6-4 title game triumph over West Hills.
WEEK 4

Shae Bass
SHAE BASS, Santana
Bass pitched the Sultans to the championship of the Hilltop Tournament, tossing a 1-hit shutout against Mar Vista in the title game. Bass struck out five and aided the offense with an RBI double. Earlier in the week, she topped Granite Hills, 1-0, and Helix, 2-1, in Grossmont Conference Tournament contests, including a solo homer for the game's only run to best the Eagles. She was named the tournament MVP.

Mahi LaBastida
MAHI LaBASTIDA, Helix
LaBastida snapped Grossmont's 6-game winning streak by tossing a 4-hit shutout at the Foothillers in Grossmont Conference Tournament play. LaBastida struck out seven against just one walk. He also batted 1-for-3 and scored a run, then added two more hits while playing third base in the Highlanders' 6-1 victory over West Hills to finish batting .500 for the week.

DESIREE GARCIA, El Cajon Valley
The Braves are off to a 3-1 start, led by Garcuia, the team's first-year varsity catcher. Her best effort was a 3-for-3 outing against San Ysidro -- all for extra bases. She slugged a pair of triples, a double, and walked to reach base on all four of her trips to the plate. She also scored twice and drove home three runs.

NICK LONGMIRE, Grossmont
Longmire, a senior outfield, led the Foothillers to a 6-0 start and a No. 2 ranking in the San Diego Section, capped by a 4-for-5 effort in the championship contest of the Foothill-Aztec Classic. Longmire added three runs and three RBI in a 14-0 pasting of Bonita Vista, including his fourth homer of the season, plus a stolen base. He also gained the pitching victory in relief during a 5-3 come-from-behind triumpg over Chula Vista.

BRYAN HAAR, Grossmont
Haar, a 3-year varsity performer, batted .750 with three doubles, a home run, five RBI and scored four times, as the undefeated Foothillers (4-0) swept three games in the Foothiller-Aztec Classic. Included was a 4-for-4 effort against second-ranked Valhalla.


Sam Beasley

SAM BEASLEY, Steele Canyon
Beasley, a senior pitcher, led the Cougars to the championship round of the Cougars Classic. She tossed a 2-hit shutout at Mission Hills,then went all 8 innings in a 2-2 tie with Rancho Bernardo, helping the Cougars pitching staff go 23 2/3 innings over four ballgames without allowing a run. The team has three no-hitters this season, all by different pitchers.

Lorena Klopp

LORENA KLOPP, Steele Canyon
Playing in her high school debut, Klopp, a freshman first-baseman, set school and Grossmont Conference record by driving in nine runs in an easy 24-0 pasting of High Tech High. In the contest, Klopp batted 4-for-5, with two homers, a triple and a double. In the second game of the season-opening doubleheader, she added a third homer.

ABEL CERVANTES & ADRIAN PADILLA, El Cajon Valley
Cervantes and Padilla combined on a two-hit shutout at Morse, leading the surprising Braves to a quick 2-0 start this season. The pair combined to strikeout eight Tigers, including five by Cervantes in his four innings of work. Meanwhile, Padilla scored the team's first run, lifting El Cajon Valley to the best record in East County.
