SAN DIEGO (7-15-09) — San Diego State's STEPHEN STRASBURG has been named recipient of the 2009 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award as the top collegiate player in the nation, USA Baseball announced Tuesday (July 14).

The award caps off a college season that saw the Aztec right-hander win numerous major awards as the top hurler in the NCAA Division I ranks. Strasburg, a product of West Hills High, becomes the second SDSU player to capture the Golden Spikes trophy after former Aztecs first baseman Travis Lee received the award in 1996.

“It’s a tremendous honor,” commented Strasburg. “You look at all the players that have been past Golden Spikes winners and to be considered in that caliber as a college player is just an amazing feeling for me. I remember three years ago, coming to San Diego State and wondering if I was even going to have a spot in the team. It’s been a roller coaster ride for me the last three years, but it’s all worth it.”

Strasburg was selected as the National Player of the Year and as a Louisville Slugger first-team All-Americn by Collegiate Baseball. Strasburg led the nation in earned run average (1.32) and strikeouts (195) in 2009, and the two-time Mountain West Conference (MWC) Pitcher of the Year finished league play with a conference-best 7-0 record (13-1 overall), an ERA of 1.50 and 111 strikeouts.

The junior standout was also recently honored with the Dick Howser Trophy as the college baseball player of the year. He received player of the year recognition from Baseball America as well, and he was also named the 2009 College Baseball Foundation Pitcher of the Year. In addition to the accolades, Strasburg was the No. 1 overall selection in the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Washington Nationals.

This year marks the 32nd consecutive year that the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award has been presented to the nation's premier amateur baseball player. Dustin Ackley (North Carolina), Mike Leake (Arizona State), Kent Matthes (Alabama), and A.J. Morris (Kansas State) were the other finalists for the award.

"Once again in 2009 we were faced with an incredibly strong collection of candidates for the Golden Spikes Award," said USA Baseball Executive Director/CEO Paul Seiler, who presented the award to Strasburg at All-Star FanFest. "Stephen Strasburg's performance this year stood out among the finalists, however, both statistically and in his leading of San Diego State to its first NCAA tournament appearance in nearly two decades. We are honored to recognize Stephen with the Golden Spikes Award, and we wish him and the other finalists success as professionals."

The selection of Strasburg marked the third time in four years that a pitcher has received the GSA (David Price of Vanderbilt, 2007; Tim Lincecum of Washington, 2006).

Since 1978, USA Baseball has honored the top amateur baseball player in the country with the GSA. Following the first ever presentation of the trophy to Bob Horner of Arizona State, the GSA has been awarded each year to the player who exhibits exceptional athletic ability and exemplary sportsmanship.

The 2008 GSA winner was Buster Posey of Florida State. Past winners of the prestigious award include current Major League Baseball players such as David Price ('07), Tim Lincecum ('06), Alex Gordon ('05), Jered Weaver ('04), Rickie Weeks ('03), Khalil Greene ('02), Jason Jennings ('00), Pat Burrell ('98), J.D. Drew ('97), Mark Kotsay ('95), and Jason Varitek ('94). Former Major League stars that have captured the award include Robin Ventura ('88), Jim Abbott ('87), Will Clark ('85), Dave Magadan ('83), Terry Francona ('80), Tim Wallach ('79), and Bob Horner ('78).

SAN DIEGO (06-11-09) — To get an idea of how hard San Diego State’s STEPHEN STRASBURG will be to sign for the Washington Nationals, one needs only to follow the path of the Nationals’ second pick.

Strasburg Interview on MLB.com HERE

While word is Strasburg seeks up to $50-million as a signing bonus, the Nationals agreed to terms on Wednesday (June 10) with right-hander Drew Storen, their second first-round pick of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft. Storen received a $1.6 million signing bonus.

Washington believes Strasburg could be twirling in the big leagues as soon as September. Of course, the biggest hurdle will be agreeing on a signing bonus.

Strasburg is the third pitcher to be selected with the No. 1 overall pick in four years, with Tampa Bay's David Price (2007) and Kansas City's Luke Hochevar (2006) already pitching in the Majors. Strasburg is the 14th pitcher taken with the first pick in the 45-year history of the Draft.

"He has power and command along with an advanced feel for pitching," said Nationals scouting director Dana Brown. "That's what makes him special.

Strasburg, 20, went 13-1 with a 1.32 ERA in 15 starts this season at SDSU en route to being named a Golden Spikes Award finalist. He struck out 195 batters with just 19 walks in 109 innings.

Strasburg, Aztecs, upset New Mexico

FORT WORTH, Texas (5-21-09) — In a pitcher's duel featuring San Diego State's STEPHEN STRASBURG, the Aztecs advanced to the winner's bracket final of the Mountain West Conference Tournament after nipping New Mexico, 2-1, at TCU's Lupton Stadium. VIDEO

Strasburg combined with ADDISON REED to upset the second-seeded Lobos and All-MWC left-hander John Hesketh. For Strasburg, he improved his record to 13-0, equaling the SDSU mark for wins in a season set by Bill Blount during the 1983 campaign.

Meanwhile, Reed, who entered to get the final out in the bottom of the 8th inning when Strasburg was forced from the game with a back cramp, it was his 18th save in 18 opportunities this year. Redd broke both conference and SDSU records for saves in a season set by former Aztecs relievers ROYCE RING (Monte Vista HS) in 2002.

Strasburg had his usual solid outing, shutting out UNM for 7.2 innings on three hits with a walk and six strikeouts. Hesketh was almost as effective over his 6.1 innings of work, allowing a run on five hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts.

After five innings of shutout ball on both sides, the Aztecs finally broke through with a run in the top of the 6th. Brandon Meredith drew a one-out walk and went to third on a single to right center by Erik Castro. After Hesketh got Cory Vaughn to pop out to second, Mitch Blackburn hit a bloop double down the left field line to bring home Meredith.

SDSU would add what would be a very important insurance run in the 9th when Easton Gust singled and advanced to third on Pat Colwell’s single to right. The Lobos brought in reliever Cole White, who would uncork a wild pitch with two out to allow Gust to score.

Colwell and Gust finished the day with two hits apiece to account for half SDSU hits, which also had five walks and left 11 men on base.

San Diego State will take Utah, which upset tournament host TCU, on Thursday (May 21) at 5 p.m. PT.

OGDEN, Utah (5-15-09) — Any record-breaking performance was gone by the 1st inning after Utah scored a pair of quick runs off San Diego State 's STEPHEN STRASBURG.

However, the All-American right-hander would yield nothing else.

SAN DIEGO (5-14-09) — Following last week's no-hitter against Air Force, San Diego State pitcher STEPHEN STRASBURG captured yet another National Player of the Week Award.

Strasburg, a junior right-hander, received the honor from two major organizations: the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and Collegiate Baseball magazine.

In addition, Strasburg was CollegeBaseballInsider.com’s National Player of the Week and was named to the College Baseball Foundation’s weekly National All-Star Lineup as well as the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week.

It marked the fifth Louisville Slugger honor and second NCBWA award in 2009 for Strasburg. It was also the eighth time in 12 weeks this season that he was listed on the College Baseball Foundation’s National All-Star Lineup. In addition, he captured the weekly MWC award for the seventh time this year.

Strasburg (West Hills HS) tossed the third individual no-hitter in MWC history in last Friday’s 5-0 win over Air Force. It is also the seventh no-hitter in SDSU program history and the first by an individual Aztecs pitcher since April 22, 1986.

Strasburg has compiled a record of 11-0 and is the NCAA Division I leader in earned run average (1.24), strikeouts (164), strikeouts per nine innings (16.9) and hits allowed per nine innings (4.54).

SAN DIEGO (5-9-09) — The list of credentials continues to grow for San Diego State junior STEPHEN STRASBURG.

On Friday (May 8), before a record crowd at Tony Gwynn Stadium, Strasburg may have out-done himself after throwing a no-hitter in the Aztecs' 5-0 triumph over Air Force. Strasburg struck out 17 Falcons in his final home start of the season.

Strasburg retired the first nine hitters he faced, seven via the strikeout, before giving up a leadoff walk to Nathan Carter to start the 4th. After a fly ball out, Carter was erased attempting to steal before another strikeout ended the inning.

The Falcons’ only other base runner on the night came on a second leadoff walk, this time to K.J. Randhawa to open the 6th. Although Randhawa would steal second later in the frame, Strasburg struck out the side to erase the threat, starting a stretch when the right-hander would retire the game's final 12 batters, including striking out the side in the 9th to the delight of the 3,337 fans.

Strasburg (11-0) has won 11 of his 12 starts this season.

Air Force starter Casey Allen, meanwhile, set down the first eight Aztec batters he faced before hitting RYAN O'SULLIVAN with two out in the 3rd.

San Diego State (32-18, 11-8 MWC) finally broke through in the bottom of the 5thas Jomel Torres doubled with two out and Easton Gust followed with an RBI single through the left side to give the Aztecs a 1-0 lead.

SDSU added a pair of runs in the next inning when Pat Colwell walked and went to second on an errant pickoff attempt by Allen. He moved up to third on Brandon Decker’s fly ball to right before Meredith drew an intentional walk to put runners at the corners.

Erik Castro then hit a grounder to Jon McMahon at third, but his throw to second was wide of the bag. Colwell scored on the play with Meredith coming home two batters later on Mitch Blackburn’s two-out single to left.

The Aztecs got their final two runs in the eighth on back-to-back singles by Meredith and Castro, a double to left by Cory Vaughn and a safety squeeze off the bat of Blackburn.

Air Force’s Allen, who went the distance on the mound, took the loss to see his record fall to 1-3 on the year. The result dropped the Falcons to 14-32 overall and 3-13 in the Mountain West Conference.

Meredith, who had a pair of singles, was the lone Aztec to record more than one hit in the contest while Blackburn finished with a single and two runs batted in.

Notes – Air Force and San Diego State continue their three-game weekend series on Saturday (May 9) with a contest scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Prior to that contest, Strasburg will officially be presented with the Dick Case Award honoring him as USA Baseball’s 2008 Athlete of the Year.

SAN DIEGO (5-7-09) — San Diego State pitcher STEPHEHN STRASBURG, who will make his final start at home on Friday (May 8), will be honored as USA Baseball's collegiate player of the year.

The right-hander will be honored with the Richard W. "Dick" Case Award during ceremonies prior to Saturday's (May 9) 1 p.m. ballgame against Air Force at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The honor covers his performance on the USA Baseball National Team (collegiate) and the U.S. Olympic Baseball Team last summer.

A native of San Diego and a West Hills High alum, Strasburg was a key part of the National Team’s undefeated season in 2008 (24-0). The summer was highlighted by Haarlem Baseball Week and FISU World University Championship titles, as well as two victories over rival Cuba ’s top professional team.

Strasburg led a stellar pitching staff, going 3-0 with a 1.06 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 34 innings pitched.

On the heels of his National Team performance, Strasburg was named to the 2008 U.S. Olympic Baseball Team, making the then sophomore the only collegiate player on a team comprised on non-25-man-roster Major League Baseball professionals.

Following a dominating showing over the Netherlands in the Olympic preliminary rounds, Strasburg was pegged as the starter against Cuba in the semifinals. Despite a loss in that game, Team USA went on to defeat Japan the next day to secure the bronze medal.

Strasburg finished the Olympic Games at 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 11 innings.

"Stephen Strasburg went above and beyond for his country in 2008,” said USA Baseball Executive Director/CEO Paul Seiler. "To follow a grueling National Team schedule with the performance he gave us in Beijing was nothing short of spectacular. There is no one more deserving than Stephen for this year’s award."

Strasburg is also on the watch list for USA Baseball’s Golden Spikes Award, which annually recognizes the top collegiate player in the country.

Strasburg (10-0) will seek his 11th victory in 12 starts when he starts against the Falcons in Friday's 6 p.m. start.

The Aztecs padded their advantage with a three-run outburst in the 5th.

Castro singled, then came home on a run-scoring double to left-center by Cory Vaughn. Blackburn then notched his second RBI of the night with a single to right that scored Vaughn to make it 4-0.

Blackburn, who had advanced to second on the throw home when Vaughn scored, went to third on a ground out to first by Jomel Torres and then scored on Gust’s sacrifice fly to deep center.

Castro finished the evening with three hits and a pair of walks as he reached safely in each of his five plate appearances. Meredith, Blackburn and Torres had two singles each.

SAN DIEGO (4-25-09) — San Diego State pitcher STEPHEN STRASBURG tossed six shutout innings, then survived a difficult stretch in the 7th inning to maintain the lead, as the 19th-ranked Aztecs nipped No. 16 TCU, 4-3, in Friday's (Apr. 24) Mountain West Conference showdown of nationally-ranked ballclubs.

Strasburg (9-0) struck out 14 batters in his seven frames to the delight of a standing room-only record crowd of 3,072 at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

San Diego State carried a 4-0 lead into the 7th, but Horned Frogs catcher Bryan Holaday got to Strasburg for a 3-run homer to left-centerfield.

The victory vaulted the Aztecs (26-13, 9-4 MWC) back into first place in the Mountain West Conference. The Lobos (28-11, 9-5 MWC) dropped into second place after a game played in weather featuring temperatures in the low 40s along with intermittent rain.

SDSU Places Five On MWC 10th Anniversary Baseball Team
Four former players and one current Aztec named to 13-man squad

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (4-2-09) — Five San Diego State players, four former and one current, have been included on the Mountain West Conference 10th Anniversary Baseball Team. The 13-man squad was selected by a combined panel of media, institutional and conference personnel plus an on-line fan poll.

The remainder of the team consisted of two players each from Utah, New Mexico and TCU along with one player from both UNLV and Air Force. To be eligible for consideration, candidates must have been a first-team all-MWC selection at least once during their career.

The five Aztecs selected to the squad include current junior right-handed pitcher STEPHEN STRASBURG (West Hills HS) along with former SDSU standouts ROYCE RING (relief pitcher), Taber Lee (shortstop), Nick Romero (third baseman) and Anthony Gwynn (outfielder). Strasburg was the only active player named to the team.

Ring was a three-year reliever for the Aztecs (2000-02) who became the team's closer as a sophomore. He earned second-team All-American honors as a junior when he set the school and conference record for saves in a season with 17. His 26 career saves are also SDSU and MWC records. A two-time all-conference first-team selection, Ring was chosen in the first round of the 2002 Major League draft by the Chicago White Sox. His career stats included a 13-6 record with a 2.96 earned run average along with 133 strikeouts in 106.1 innings.

Lee was also a member of the San Diego State squad from 2000-02 where he earned All-West Region second team and all-MWC first team accolades as a junior. During that season, he batted .355 with 15 doubles, 46 runs, 47 RBI and a .955 fielding percentage before being taken in the third round by Pittsburgh in the 2002 draft. Also a first-team all-conference honoree as a sophomore, Lee finished his Aztec career with a .333 career batting average.

Gwynn (2001-03) was a three-year starter in center field for the Aztecs and one of the finest defensive players to play in the outfield for SDSU. During his junior season of 2003, he led the team in hitting with a .353 average and finished with 15 doubles, seven triples, 50 runs and 25 stolen bases en route to winning first-team all-conference accolades. Gwynn ended his college career with a .341 average over his three years and became a second-round pick of Milwaukee in 2003. He ranks among the SDSU top 10 five offensive categories.

Romero (2006-08) was a two-time all-Mountain West Conference first team third baseman after winning second-team honors as a freshman. During his three-year career, he earned national and conference player of the weeks honors as well. As a junior in 2008, Romero led the club home runs, RBI and walks, three stat categories in which he ranks among the Aztec all-time top 10 as well. His collegiate career ended last June when he was taken by the Minnesota Twins in the fifth round of the pro draft.

Strasburg was a consensus All-America selection as a sophomore in 2008 after setting school and conference records for strikeouts in a game (23) and season (133). He also set new MWC marks in both overall and conference play for earned run average, strikeouts (tied the overall mark) and opponent batting average. After earning co-Freshman of the Year and second-team all-conference honors as a freshman, he was voted the MWC Pitcher of the Year in 2008. A member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic team, Strasburg has won both national and league pitching honors on several occasions in 2009.

Notes – Strasburg was again named Mountain West Conference pitcher of the week for the 5th time in 2009.

No. 16 Killer Frogs get K'd by Strasburg

FORT WORTH, Texas (3-28-09) — San Diego State pitcher STEPHEN STRASBURG survived a cold and windy night, and a leadoff home run to start the game, tossing 8 strong innings in the Aztecs' 11-5 victory over 16th-ranked TCU in Friday's (Mar. 27) 3-game Mountain West Conference series opener at Lupton Stadium.

Strasburg, who got touched by Horned Frogs second baseman Ken Carruthers on his first pitch of the night, allowed just one other run all contest. Strasburg finished with 14 strikeouts in 8 innings of work, raising his record to 5-0.

It was the fourth straight triumph for the Aztecs (17-9, 5-2 MWC).

Fortunately for Strasburg, before he allowed Carruthers' homer, SDSU already built a 3-0 lead when catcher Erik Castro took advantage of a stiff breeze blowing out to left field and lifted a 3-run homer with Brandon Decker and Brandon Meredith on base.

Castro, who had four hits on the night including a pair of doubles along with a single and the homer, continues to be one of the hottest hitters in the MWC. He has now gone 19-for-27 with eight doubles, two homers, nine runs scored and 15 RBI over SDSU’s last seven contests.

After the homer by TCU (14-8, 2-2 MWC), the Horned Frogs would only tally two more over Strasburg’s eight innings of work. In fact, the Aztec junior right-hander retired the next 14 consecutive batters before giving up a two-out single in the 5th.

SDSU later received a 2-run homer by Cory Vaught in the 5th. Easton Gust and RYAN O’SULLIVAN added run-scoring singles in the 8th. O'Sullivan registered two of the Aztecs' 17 hits. MORE

SAN DIEGO (3-21-09) — It was another standout performance for San Diego State right-hander STEPHEN STRASBURG. Seven innings, 15 strikeouts, no runs allowed – and no decision after Brigham Young rallied for four runs against the Aztecs bullpen in a 4-2 Mountain West Conference victory at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

The BYU bats were silent for seven innings against Strasburg, but the Cougars took advantage late to win for the second time in as many nights. BYU improved to 13-7 overall and moved into sole possession of second place in the Mountain West Conference at 4-1. SDSU, meanwhile, saw its record slide to 13-8 (3-2 in conference play).

A crowd of 2,032 fans, the second-largest gathering of the season and fourth biggest in school history, came out to see Strasburg and he did not disappoint. The junior right-hander opened the contest by striking out the side, a feat he accomplished in two other innings as well. On the evening he struck out 15 while giving up two hits and a walk over his seven innings of work. MORE

Strasburg makes the switch
Moves to Fridays, O'Sullivan goes on Tuesday

SAN DIEGO (3-17-09) — San Diego State right-hander STEPHEN STRASBURG, who won yet another award as Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball magazine, is making a move.

The right-handed out of West Hills High will now pitch each Friday for the rest of the season, according to Aztecs head coach TONY GWYNN. Strasburg previously pitched each Thursday, the opening game of each Mountain West Conference series. Thus, his next scheduled start will be this Friday's game (March 20) against Brigham Young at 6 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

The change to the team rotation means Valhalla High alum RYAN O'SULLIVAN will start Tuesday's (tonight, Mar. 17) non-conference game against Kansas in the opener of a 2-game series. First pitch is at 6 p.m.

While Strasburg took national honors for the third time this season, he was overshadowed by teammate JOE BERGER, who was named the MWC conference pitcher of the week.

It was the first career award for Berger and marked the fourth time this season that an Aztec hurler has captured the league’s weekly honor.

Berger went 8 innings in a start against UNLV last Saturday, striking out 10 without a walk in the Aztecs' 6-1 win over the Rebels. The 10 strikeouts were a career high and it marked the third time in his four starts that he gave up no walks.

Strasburg struck out 14 batters over 7 innings in a 4-3 win over UNLV. Eight of the first nine outs he recorded came via the strikeout.

Strasburg is Beijing bound
Lone amateur on U.S. Olympic team

Courtesy, SDSU Media Relations
SAN DIEGO (7-16-08) -- San Diego State pitcher STEPHEN STRASBURG (West Hills HS) has been selected to play on the U.S. baseball team at next month’s Olympic Games to be held in Beijing, China. Strasburg is the lone amateur named to the 24-man squad that consists of primarily of professional players not currently on the active roster of a major league club.

A right-hander who will be a junior at SDSU in the fall, Strasburg is the first college player to be named to the U.S. team since the decision was made to use minor leaguers beginning in 2000. The 2008 roster contains14 players currently at the AAA level, seven in Double-A and one in Single-A. One more player will be added to the roster in the near future to bring the team to its full complement of 24 athletes for the games.

Strasburg will become the fourth Aztec to compete with the U.S. Olympic baseball team, following in the footsteps of former Aztecs in outfielder Chris Gwynn (1984), shortstop Flavio Alfaro (1984), first baseman Travis Lee (1996) and former Monte Vista HS standout pitcher Royce Ring (2003 Olympic qualifying tournament).

Strasburg made national headlines this year following a 23-strikeout performance against Utah on April 11, 2008, that was part of a breakthrough sophomore campaign. The 19-year-old from San Diego (West Hills HS), who turns 20 on Sunday, is currently anchoring the pitching staff on the 2008 USA Baseball National Team. The team of collegiate all-stars is fresh off a first-place finish at Haarlem Baseball Week in the Netherlands, which included two victories over the Cuban National Team.

Since joining the U.S. national collegiate squad in June, Strasburg has made five starts and compiled a record of 3-0 with a 1.33 earned run average. Over his 27 innings of work, he has struck out 40 and walked four while limiting opponents to a .160 batting average. Included in his win total are victories over Japan and Chinese-Taipei at the Haarlem Baseball Week tournament.

Team USA is currently in the Czech Republic preparing to play in the FISU World Collegiate Baseball Championship that runs from July 17-27. That tourney includes teams representing Korea, Japan, Chinese-Taipei, Lithuania, India and Canada along with the host country. Strasburg is expected to start the USA’s opening contest in the tournament against Korea on Friday (July 18).

Following that event, he will join up with the U.S. Olympic team as it plays a four-game series against Canada (Aug. 1-4) in North Carolina before departing for Beijing. The U.S. will open play in China against Korea on Aug. 13 at Wukesong Baseball Stadium. That contest begins the round robin portion of the schedule during which the USA will also face Netherlands, Cuba, Canada, China, Chinese-Taipei and Japan. The top four teams in the standings will then be paired in the semifinals of the medal round.

Fans can follow the progress of the Team USA national collegiate squad and the U.S. Olympic team at the USA Baseball web site (www.usabaseball.com).

SAN DIEGO (5-30-08) -- San Diego State's baseball program is quickly realizing it is recruiting players from the wrong part of the country -- ballplayers from the East County are fitting in quite nicely.

For the first time since 2002, a member of the Aztecs has earned All-America recognition, as sophomore pitcher STEPHEN STRASBURG was named to the Louisville Slugger first-team.

The West Hills High product is the first SDSU player to receive such laurels since pitcher ROYCE RING (Monte Vista HS) was a third-team honoree in 2006. The last Aztec to gain first-team honors was Travis Lee in 1996.

Strasburg, a right-hander, was a Freshman All-America in 2007. He completed the 2008 season with a record of 8-3, a 1.57 earned run average and a .181 opponent batting average. His 133 strikeouts (in 97.1 innings) lead the nation this week and he also ranks fourth in the country in earned run average and strikeouts per nine innings (12.30).

Strasburg earned the attention of the nation on April 11 when he struck out 23 batters in the Aztecs’ contest against Utah in San Diego . It was the third-most strikeouts ever in a college game and the most since 1981. That contest came during a run of six straight games in which he reached double figures in strikeouts.

His strikeout total also broke the SDSU single-season record of 122 set by Rob Brown during the 1989 campaign.

Strasburg Earns National, MWC Pitcher Of The Week Awards

SAN DIEGO (4-28-08) -- San Diego State sophomore Stephen Strasburg has been named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball magazine and is the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week for his performance in the Aztecs' 4-1 win over TCU on Friday, April 25.

It marks the third straight week and fifth time in 2008 that he has won the conference award. It is also his second national pitching honor in the past three weeks.

Strasburg threw a one-hit complete-game in the Aztecs' win over the Horned Frogs this past weekend. It was his second complete-game one-hitter in his last three starts. He retired the first 18 batters he faced before a leadoff double in the seventh. A wild pitch and ground out to second scored the run. He later surrendered his only walk of the game in the same inning.

Strasburg went on to retire the side in order in both the eighth and ninth with the seventh being the only frame in which a runner reached base against him. He finished the night with 13 strikeouts including three of the game's final four outs as TCU (which came in having won 13 of its last 15) hit .034 for the contest. The run he allowed in the seventh was the first run he had given up in 34 consecutive innings going back to the Aztecs' contest at Utah on March 20.

Over his last four starts, Strasburg has recorded 61 strikeouts over 33 innings, an average of almost two K's per inning. His season total of 99 strikeouts is tied for the national lead in Division I entering this week.

DENVER (4-21-08) -- For the fourth time this season and second consecutive week, San Diego State pitcher STEPHEN STRASBURG has been named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week. He earned the award for his 13-strikoeut performance in SDSU’s series-opening victory at UNLV last weekend.

Strasburg, a product of West Hills HS, earned his fifth win of the season in the Aztecs’ 17-1 win over the Rebels. In 7.0 innings on the mound, along with his 13 strikeouts, Strasburg scattered four hits without allowing any runs or walks.

With one out and a runner on third in the third inning, Strasburg struck out two hitters to get out of the jam. Only one other Rebel runner reached as far as second base against him for the rest of the contest.

With the seven shutout innings, Strasburg lowered his overall earned run average to 1.73 to led all MWCC pitchers. He has recorded an amazing 86 strikeouts and only eight walks in 57.1 innings this season.

San Diego State will visit USC on Tuesday (Apr. 22) for a 7 p.m. contest before hosting first-place TCU in the three-game series at Tony Gwynn Stadium this weekend. Strasburg is expected to be on the mound in the opener against the Horned Frogs, who lead SDSU by one game in the MWC standings, on Friday (Apr. 25) at 7 p.m.

LAS VEGAS (4-18-08) -- In support of another standout pitching effort by sophomore STEPHEN STRASBURG, San Diego State's bats came alive as they struck for season highs in runs (17) and hits (20) in the Aztecs' 17-1 win over UNLV at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

SDSU's run total exceeded the previous season best of 15 against the University of San Diego during the opening weekend. The team's season high of 18 hits came in that same weekend as well as in the 12-3 win over Oklahoma State.

Strasburg, who struck out 23 in a one-hit shutout of Utah in his last outing, began the contest by striking out the first six Rebel batters he faced. He ended up pitching seven innings, holding UNLV (16-20, 5-8 MWC) scoreless while scattering four hits and striking out 13 with no walks. The win improved his season record to 5-1 as he lowered his earned run average to 1.73 overall and 0.90 in Mountain West Conference games.

The Aztecs (23-15, 10-3 MWC) took the lead in the second inning as Nick Romero led off with a single and was balked to second base by UNLV starter Matt Hutchison. Garett Green then laced a double to right center field to bring home Romero. It was the first of eight runs allowed by the Rebel sophomore right-hander on the evening as he would eventually be tagged with the loss to drop to 1-3.

Lauded for 23-strikeout performance

SAN DIEGO (4-14-08) -- San Diego State sophomore STEPHEN STRASBURG has been named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the week by Collegiate Baseball magazine and is the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week after his record-setting performance against Utah last Friday (Apr. 11). It marks the third time in 2008 that he has won the conference award and he is the first Aztec national pitcher of the week since the 2001 season.

Strasburg threw a one-hit complete-game shutout in SDSU's 1-0 win over Utah last Friday, setting a new San Diego State and Mountain West Conference record with 23 strikeouts. He struck out the side in the first inning as well as the fifth through eighth. A total of 16 of the final 17 outs he recorded came via the strikeout.

Strasburg did not allow a hit until the sixth inning, a chopper up the middle that went for a single. He allowed only three other Ute base runners (walk, hit by pitch and error) with none advancing past second base. Utah, which came into the contest with a .322 team batting average, hit just .038 on the night.

The Aztec right-hander broke the school record of 18 strikeouts by John Hemmerly, who accomplished the feat vs. Colorado State during the 1988 campaign. The previous MWC mark was also set by a former SDSU pitcher when Marcos Mendoza fanned 17 vs. New Mexico in 2001.

Strasburg's 23 K's ties for the third-most ever in a Division I game and are the most in a game since the 1981 season. The NCAA record is 26 by Buddy Schultz of Miami (Ohio) against Wright State in 1973. LSU's Butch Mixon struck out 24 in a contest vs. Louisiana-Lafayette during the 1959 season. Three others recorded 23 K's in a game, the most recent being Neal Heaton of Miami (Fla.) vs. Indiana State in 1981. Each of those games was a nine-inning affair.

Strasburg Fans Record 23 Utes

SAN DIEGO (4-11-08) -- San Diego State sophomore right-hander STEPHEN STRASBURG etched his name in the record books as he struck out 23 batters in the Aztecs' 1-0 win over Utah Friday evening (Apr. 11) at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Strasburg set both the SDSU and Mountain West Conference marks for strikeouts in a game as he allowed only four base runners on the night, none of which passed second base.

The win improved the Aztecs to 19-15 overall as they maintained a hold on first place in the league standings at 7-3. The Utes, meanwhile, fell to 13-15 on the season and 3-3 in conference play.

Strasburg's effort shattered the San Diego State record of 18 K's set by John Hemmerly against Colorado State during the 1988 season. He also established a new MWC standard, breaking the record of former Aztec Marcos Mendoza, who struck out 17 hitters against New Mexico in 2001.

Strasburg's performance almost went for naught as the SDSU offense was held in check by Utah starting hurler Stephen Fife (4-3), who pitched into the seventh inning but would eventually be tagged with the loss.

The Aztecs had their chances, getting a runner to third base with two outs in the first, third and fifth innings. They had a golden opportunity in the sixth, putting men on first and third with no outs, but again they came up empty.

The breakthrough came in the bottom of the seventh when SDSU loaded the bases with a one-out on a single by Erik Castro, walk to Brandon Decker and hit by pitch to Pat Colwell. Troy Hanzawa then hit a grounder to third, but when DC Legg's throw to the plate sailed past the catcher, Castro scored the unearned run. It was cruel fate for Fife, who ended his night after 6.2 innings in which he allowed the lone run on five hits while striking out four.

However, the night belonged to Strasburg (4-1), who did not allow a base runner until the fourth inning with a base on balls to Corey Shimada. After Shimada was caught stealing, Strasburg got 16 of the Utes' final 17 outs via the strikeout with the other coming on a sacrifice bunt in the final frame. Utah's lone hit of the contest was a chopper by Michael Beltran that got through the middle of the diamond in the sixth.

Strasburg, Aztecs whip No. 5 USD

SAN DIEGO (2-23-08) -- Many experts believe USD pitcher Brian Matusz, a Baseball America preseason All-America selection, may be the first choice in the Major League Baseball free agent draft come May.

If the Toreros' Matusz is so highly prized, then how good is San Diego State sophomore pitcher STEPHEN STRASBURG?

Strasburg, the hard-throwing right-hander out of West Hills High, made his conversion from bullpen ace to starting pitcher a successful one Friday (Feb. 22) at Tony Gwynn Stadium, out-dueling Matusz as the Aztecs stunned the 5th-ranked Toreros, 11-2, in the first of a 4-game, season-opening series.

Strasburg, who is rated as the third-best prospect among the nation's sophomores by Baseball America because of a fastball clocked in the high 90s, walked the first batter he faced, but settled in after that, going eight solid innings with seven strikeouts while giving up two runs on five hits.

Both of those runs came in the top of the 3rd as a safety squeeze by Ryan Davis brought home the opening run and a steal of home by Kevin Muno accounted for the second. Among the five hits, only one ball was hit hard -- a triple by USD centerfielder Josh Romanski in the 6th.

Romanski was a second-team All-America pick by the same publication.

San Diego State rallied from a 2-0 deficit when Eastlake High product Nick Romero slugged a 3-run homer to left in the 3rd. Romero finished with a 3-or-4 outing with four RBI. The Axtecs put the game away with five runs in the 7th.

The teams continue their series on Saturday (Feb. 23) with a split doubleheader. The teams will square off at 1:00 p.m. at USD's Cunningham Stadium, then move back to Tony Gwynn Stadium for a 7:00 p.m. contest.

Notes -- Former Grossmont High standout A.J. GRIFFIN, the closer for USD, highlights the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's Stopper of the Year Award watch list. Griffin is listed among 39 other players in Division I.

The award is given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball. Griffin, a first-team All-West Coast Conference selection last year and preseason All-American, quickly became a big help for the Toreros as a freshman, as he served as USD's primary closer in 2007.

The right-hander from Grossmont High etched his name into the single-season record books at USD having recorded 11 saves on the season to place second in the category, only trailing Tony Perez's 13 saves set during the 2003 season. Griffin posted an overall record of 6-2 with a team-leading 2.70 ERA. Griffin also fanned 65 batters and issued only 23 walks in 34 appearances.

Wallace Award Watch List

LUBBOCK, Texas (12-10-07) -- San Diego State sophomore pitcher STEPHEN STRASBURG and senior second baseman Garett Green have been named to the 2008 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Award Watch list. The initial list contains a total of 224 nominees with the Aztec twosome among the five players representing the Mountain West Conference.

Strasburg returns to SDSU for his second season after being named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in 2007. He finished the season with a record of 1-3, seven saves and a 2.43 earned run average as the Aztecs' closer. He struck out 47 and walked only 15 over 37 innings and was named the MWC co-Freshman of the Year.

This past summer, Strasburg pitched for the Torrington Twisters in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, compiling a mark of 1-0 with eight saves and a 1.29 ERA. He was a first-team all-NECBL selection and was named the league's top reliever. He was invited to join Team USA for its five-game series against Chinese Taipei in late June, making two appearances resulting in one save and a 1.80 earned run average.

The Wallace Award is presented to the nation's top collegiate baseball player in conjunction with the College Baseball Hall of Fame's annual induction festivities. The 2008 award banquet will be held Thursday, July 3, in the United Spirit Arena on the campus of Texas Tech University.

Dedicated to the memory of former Texas Tech shortstop and assistant coach, Wallace was a slick-fielding shortstop at Texas Tech from 1977 to 1980. A four-year starter, he was named All-Southwest Conference and All-District Six his senior year when he led the Red Raiders to their first-ever appearance in the Southwest Conference Tournament. After playing two years in the Texas Rangers organization, he returned to Texas Tech and served as a graduate assistant and later as an assistant coach. In the summer of 1984 he was diagnosed with cancer and fought the disease courageously until his death on March 24, 1985, at age 27.

The selection committee for the Wallace Award is comprised of a national panel of preeminent coaches, sports information directors, former winners and beat media who most closely follow the sport. The list of players will expand and contract during the regular season and additional Wallace Watch candidates may be added as the season progresses.
