EL CAJON (7-28-10) — Grossmont High pitcher-first baseman JOE MUSGROVE has been selected to play on the Milwaukee Brewers Blue team that will be among the teams playing in the Area Code Games on Aug. 5-10 at Long Beach’s Blair Field.

Joining him on the Blue Team will be La Costa Canyon infielder Phillip Evans, Cathedral Catholic pitcher-outfielder Daniel Camarena and Rancho Bernardo first baseman Max Homix. Evans and Camarena will also play in the annual Aflac All-Star Classic on Aug. 15 at Petco Park .

Musgrove, who has played for the Tampa Bay Scout Ball Team the past two years, was chosen from an invitation only tryout recently to play on the prestigious Angel Elite Scout Ball Team sponsored by the Los Angeles Angels.

Musgrove will also be honored at the July 30 Padres game as SDCIF Player of the Month for June, as selected by the San Diego Hall of Champions.

Musgrove dials up success

LONG BEACH (8-15-10) — Grossmont High senior JOE MUSGROVE continues to make headlines wherever he pitches.

In the recently completed Area Code games at Blair Field, the 6-foot-5, 230-pound Musgrove, who was twirling for the Milwaukee Brewers’ entry, was the top pitcher in game three of the prestigious event. The hard-throwing right-hander delivered three hitless innings against the Washington Nationals, while striking out three and walking none.

Reed joins Yankees' Code team

© East County Sports.com
LONG BEACH (8-3-10) — Now that he’s focused his attention on baseball over football, Helix senior JAKE REED is drawing more attention from the baseball set.

The latest attraction for Reed is he has been invited to play for the New York Yankees youth all-stars in the Area Code Games that begin Thursday (Aug. 5) and run through Tuesday (Aug. 10) at Blair Field. Seven major league organizations are fielding high school teams in the event that annually attracts scouts and college coaches by the dozens.

Reed selects Oregon for baseball

© East County Sports.com
LA MESA (7-25-10) — Going into his final high school season multi-talented JAKE REED of Helix High clearly had a choice for his collegiate future – baseball or football.

Colleges throughout the nation expressed interest in the 6-foot-1, 170-pound Reed on both sides of the coin.

The mystery is over. Reed has cast his fate in baseball and has accepted a scholarship to the University of Oregon where he will pitch and possibly play some third base for the Ducks.

“Obviously, there were a lot of factors behind my decision,” Reed said. “One of the biggest is a chance to play in the Pac-10. That’s every kid’s dream.”

Baseball is a relatively new sport in the Pac-10 for Oregon which brought the national pastime back to the Eugene, Ore., campus three years ago. In their initial year of rebuilding the program the Ducks were a forgettable 14-42 and then erupted to a 40-24 finish last season.

“I like playing football, but I believe my future is best served by playing baseball,” Reed said. “No question it was a tough decision giving up football.”

Reed, however, may keep his toe in football as the Highlanders kicker and punter in the fall.

While Helix football coach TROY STARR would no doubt relish having Reed directing his offense, he will settle for Reed handling the kicking chores. This will hardly be a sacrifice.

Reed has converted 65 of 78 PATs and 7 of 10 field goals heading into his senior season.

“I’m thinking about helping the football team as a kicker if Coach Starr wants me to,” Reed said.

For Starr, overlooking Reed as his primary quarterback is even more frustrating. In little more than two seasons Reed has passed for 1,728 yards and 15 TDs. Only injuries have impeded those totals.

Bottom line, though, is Reed’s main line is pitching.

“I want to pitch,” Reed said. “Everything after that is secondary. What Oregon has offered me is exciting.’

Given that he’s made a decision for his college future, Reed’s senior season should offer much relief.

Helix baseball coach COLE HOLLAND noted that Reed had dozens of college baseball offers, including USD, Arizona State, Pepperdine, Stanford, UC Riverside and San Diego State.

“Oregon gave Jake an offer that the majority of high school recruits never receive,” said Holland . “I know it was hard for Jake to give up football but he has a much better upside in baseball.”

Four Inlanders earn All-State honors

© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (7-7-10) — Four East County athletes are among 18 San Diego CIF baseball players recognized in postseason balloting by Cal-Hi Sports.com.

El Capitan shortstop TYRONE WIGGINS was named to the All-State second team.

Named to the All-State medium school teams were Wiggins and Santana third baseman KYLE HAYES.

Grossmont pitcher-first baseman JOE MUSGROVE was a first team pick in the Cal-Hi All-State first team underclassman team. El Capitan’s TROY CONYERS – a pitcher-first baseman – also earned a berth on this team.

Other SDCIF standouts receiving all-state honors of various degrees include Scripps Ranch catcher Wynston Sawyer, Torrey Pines pitcher Joey DeNato, Rancho Buena Vista shortstop Tony Wolters, Oceanside power hitting first baseman Aaron Siliga, Poway outfielder Brett Thomas, Poway third baseman Dillon Dooney, Rancho Bernardo pitcher Trevor Williams, Ramona pitcher Cody Willingham, St. Augustine center fielder Connor Hofmann, Rancho Bernardo outfielder Andrew Daniel, Cathedral Catholic pitcher Daniel Camarena, Poway pitcher Keegan Yuhl, La Costa Canyon shortstop Phillip Evans, and Rancho Bernardo pitcher-outfielder Max Homick.

Locals gain scholarships

© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (6-9-10) — A pair of East County players have secured scholarship offers for next season.

Grossmont High pitcher-outfielder STEVEN BRAULT will continue his education and baseball career at Denver’s Regis University, while Foothills Christian pitcher-catcher CODY LEWIS will advance to Avila University, an NAIA institution in Kansas City, Mo.

A double threat, Brault batted .378 and logged an 8-1 record and a 2.56 ERA as a senior for the San Diego CIF Division II champion Foothillers (27-7).

Lewis was the centerpiece for Foothills Christian, which made a strong run to finish in second place in the Citrus West League. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Lewis batted .412 and compiled a 6-3 record with 7 complete games and a 2.43 ERA.

The Regis Rangers, who compete at the NCAA Division II level, are coming off a 15-29 finish.

Meanwhile, the Avila Eagles (35-15) reached the second round of the NAIA National Baseball Tournament.
