LA JOLLA (5-29-11) — Game balls went out to pitcher RACHEL STALFORD and slugger HAYLEY KASDEN for leading Grossmont High to its first softball championship since 1993 on Saturday (May 28) with a 4-3 win over top-seeded Poway in the CIF San Diego Section Division I final at UC San Diego.

Foothillers coach JERRY LERUD is hoping to get a ball of his own. Hopefully sometime over this Memorial Day weekend as his next trip to the hospital will be his third since going to the emergency room on Wednesday and Friday for kidney stones.

“Knowing what it was – kidney stones – made it easier,” Lerud, 57, said. “But it hurt like hell. Still does.

“But nothing would have kept me from this.

“Euphoria, I guess is how I feel right now. Eighteen years – it’s a long time coming. We just knew the girls could do it. I’ll remember this for life.”

Some other things he will never forget:

Kasden’s booming three-run home run over the right-field fence that gave the No. 6-seeded Foothillers (23-10-1) a 3-1 lead in the 3rd inning against the suddenly stunned Titans (25-7).

“Once I hit it, I just knew it was gone,” Kasden said.

Stalford (22-10) allowed two homers in the 4th to tie the game, but then she settled down to retire the next nine batters she faced before sophomore catcher SARAH NICKS threw out Poway’s Chase Snell trying to steal second for the final out of the game.

“Rachel’s been great all season,” Kasden said. “We’re so glad she was able to get a big win like this in her final game.”

Stalford also drove in the winning run in the fifth inning with a bloop single to left that plated AUBRIE MAY.

“I didn’t think it was going to be a hit,” Stalford said. “I was extremely late on the pitch. I just muscled it out there, and it fell in the right place.”

Other than the two home runs – which were sandwiched around a popup to Nicks – Stalford allowed only three singles, the last of which was produced by Snell with two out in the bottom of the 7th. Taking off for second on the first pitch, Nicks nailed her with a perfect throw to the shortstop, May, who tagged Snell on a very close play and anxiously awaited the umpire’s call.

“I thought we had her,” Stalford said.“But with umpires you never know.”

While Nicks’ throw ended the game, her sister, third baseman KAITLYN NICKS, saved a run in the 2nd with an equally fine play, snaring a smashed line drive to her left with a runner at third and two out.

Stalford and Kaitlyn Nicks are the only seniors for Grossmont, which shared the Grossmont Hills League title with Steele Canyon this year.

“We deserved it,” Sarah Nicks said. “We worked really hard this year. It’s a great bunch of girls. And we’ll be back.”

Not quite as unlikely as No. 10-seeded West Hills beating No. 1 Bonita Vista for the Division II title earlier Saturday, but Grossmont’s run through the Division I double elimination playoffs was noteworthy in that the Foothillers played a North County team in every game, going 5-1 with the lone setback coming Thursday (May 26) in a 2-0 loss to Poway.

Grossmont rebounded from that loss – it’s second 2-0 loss to Poway this season – by beating Rancho Bernardo, 7-4, in a second semifinal game on Thursday. The other wins came against San Pasqual, 6-0, Torrey Pines, 2-1, and Escondido , 4-0. Stalford pitched every inning in all of them.

“I don’t think North County expected an East County team like us to come out and beat them for the championship,” Stalford said. “But we have good teams in the East County, too.”

Said Lerud, “We knew we could score against Poway, but we hadn’t in our two previous games against them. It’s hard to beat someone three times in a row. We thought we’d come out loose and play with a lot of heart. Rachel’s on her game. She’s kept us in there all year.”

Poway got on the board first. Catcher Angie Randazzo led off the 2nd with a double over the head of center fielder AMANDA PORTER. Randazzo then stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Nicole Johnson.

Grossmont answered quickly with three runs in the next inning. Porter and May led off the inning with sharp singles to the left side before Kasden swung at a low inside fastball and sailed it over a CIF championship banner on the right-field fence.

“I was aiming for a base hit,” Kasden said. “I just got all of it, and it went over the fence. I knew it was gone when I hit it. It felt like I swung through air it came so clean off the bat.”

The Titans flexed their muscles in the fourth inning as Ashley Andrusky and Johnson both homered over the left-field fence.

“I guess they were the perfect home run pitches,” Stalford admitted.

“She made two mistakes,” Lerud said. “That’s what happens sometimes.”

Likewise, longtime Poway coach Jim Bennett couldn’t fault his pitcher, Alayna Brenman, for giving up the three-run jack to Kasden.

“One bad pitch… three-run homer,” Bennett said. “Alayna missed a spot, and (Kasden) hit it over the fence.”

Grossmont scored the decisive run in the fifth inning off reliever Brianna Burns. With one out, May walked and moved to second on Kasden’s line single to left. Stalford then nudged her game-winner into short left, scoring May just before Kasden was thrown out trying to advance to third.

“Grossmont’s a hitting team,” Stalford said. “I knew whatever pitcher they put in that we’d hit her. And we hit both of them.”

Like Kasden, Sarah Nicks collected two hits – a shot to center in the second and a grounder that hit the first-base bag in the sixth. Sophomore first baseman MEAGAN CRISCI followed Nicks’ single in the second with a single over third base. They were stranded, however, when sophomore left fielder KAYLA APPENZELLER flew out to left field.

“Jerry’s got a good team over there,” Bennett said. “The way I look at it, if you get this far, you’re good. It doesn’t matter where they seed you. It comes down to one pitch, one run most of the time.”

Said Lerud, “They’re a classy team. They’ll be back next year, and so will we. We only have three seniors.”

Lerud and Grossmont will also be missing the on-field services of assistant coach LEO TUCK, who plans to cut back after 20 years of volunteering for the Foothillers. The 86-year-old Tuck, an Iwo Jima survivor in World War II, was a teacher and administrator for Cajon Valley School District for 37 years.

“Our whole season’s been for him,” Lerud said. “He’s our hero.

“He may not be on the field next year, but he’ll be around. He’s not going anywhere. He’s such an inspiration to the girls. They really listen to him. We’ve been really blessed to have known a man like him.”

Earned!

While the West Hills softball team felt horribly slighted, downright disrespected when it received only a No. 10 seed at the start of the CIF San Diego Section Division II playoffs, the Wolf Pack certainly earned redemption Saturday (May 28) at UC San Diego.

Pulling off perhaps the greatest upset in section finals history, West Hills surprised one of the best teams in section history with a resounding 4-0 triumph for its first SDCIF title since 1999.

No No.-10 seed had ever even made it to a championship game, let alone beat a team the caliber of Bonita Vista, ranked No. 1 in the county, No. 4 in the state and No. 13 in the country with a 34-1 record coming in and a slew of astounding offensive statistics.

“Our theme throughout the playoffs was respect,” said West Hills coach MIKE APPLEBAUM, whose team lost the title game to four-time champion Mt. Carmel on the same field last year. “Last year our theme was ‘Pride and Desire’. This year was all about respect.

“Nobody gave us any when the playoffs started. I think we got it today.”

Senior NOELLE JOHNSON pitched a brilliant two-hitter with seven strikeouts, senior TAYLOR HALLAHAN had three hits, an RBI and scored the winning run on a double by freshman CORTNEY HORNE to lead a parade of heroes for the Wolf Pack (19-10-1).

West Hills, which finished third in the Grossmont Hills League behind co-champions Grossmont and Steele Canyon, beat Patrick Henry, 9-4, in a “play-in game” just to get into the double-elimination playoff format. The Wolf Pack then topped No. 2 Mt. Carmel, 4-2, and Westview, 5-4, before losing to Bonita Vista, 1-0, on a throwing error in the fourth round on Thursday. The Wolf Pack came back later that day to beat Point Loma, 2-1, to get to the final.

“We respected our opponents,” Applebaum said. “We respected ourselves. Everyone contributed. This is incredible.”

The mighty Barons, with five players hitting .426 or better and an offense averaging 9.4 runs per game, managed just two hits off West Hills ace Johnson – the same measly number they got on Thursday off the junior right-hander, who ran her record to 13-7 with a 1.26 ERA and 156 strikeouts in 133 innings pitched.

“Their pitcher’s tough,” Bonita Vista coach JOHN CARLSON said. “She’s good. She’s really good.”

Said Johnson, emphasizing the point, “We wanted this so badly. We didn’t want to be on the other side like last year. That was the worst feeling last year.

“This year, it feels great!”

Johnson needed only 68 pitches – a remarkable 50 of those for strikes – to strikeout seven without a walk and notch the gem she had hoped for last year.

“Noelle’s an amazing pitcher,” Hallahan said. “She’s a star. She pretty much holds this team together. She’s awesome, and she pitched a great game today.”

Said Johnson, “I just worked on hitting my spots, keeping them off-balanced, keep them guessing. I guess it worked.”

Did it ever.

Johnson allowed only one runner to reach second base. The Barons’ Kayla Jordan, hitting .510 with nine home runs and 49 RBI, singled up the middle and stole second with one out in the fourth inning. She remained there, however, as Johnson induced a fly to center and struck out Ruby Elliott to end the inning. Those two outs began a string in which Johnson retired the final 11 batters of the game.

A popup by Elliott to West Hills senior second baseman VANESSA McHUGH ended the game and set off a wild celebration by the ’Pack.

“This is a group of really young girls who scrapped and played hard and beat the No. 13 team in the country,” Applebaum said. “I couldn’t be any more proud of them.”

West Hills, which is now 2-1 in section championship games, assumed a 2-0 lead with a brilliant top half of the fourth inning. Leadoff hitter Hallahan collected her second hit of the game to lead things off and advanced to second on a sharp grounder to short by senior leftfielder HEATHER VALLES. Johnson then drew a walk to set the table for Horne, a third baseman and a first-team all-league selection in her first season of high school ball.

Eyeing an outside fastball, Horne ripped a liner to right-centerfield that split the defense and bounced to the wall for a double, easily scoring Hallahan and sending courtesy pinch-runner JENNY SHEPARD to third.

“(The pitch) was a little closer than I expected,” Horne said. “I was just thinking, ‘I’ve got to get this hit. I’ve got to help my team right here.”

Freshman designated player KATIE BYRD followed that with a line-drive single to center that brought Shepard home and Horne to third.

Byrd promptly stole second base, but the Wolf Pack couldn’t capitalize on the second-and-third situation as senior catcher SAVANNA BAGGETT fouled out to the Barons’ catcher and second baseman McHugh was robbed of a would-be two-run single by a running, shoestring catch by centerfielder Hannah Flippen.

The Wolf Pack got two more insurance runs in the seventh inning.

Baggett led off with a line double inches inside the right-field foul line. McHugh then singled to center, sending Baggett to third. After McHugh stole second, JAYMEE BUSH hit an RBI grounder to second as courtesy runner KAYCEE AQUINIGOC beat the fielder’s choice throw to the plate with a nifty head-first dive.

Sophomore shortstop ARIANNA QUINTANILLA grounded out to third before Hallahan singled to left to score McHugh.

Still with only one out, Valles lined out to short, Johnson walked to load the bases, but Horne grounded to second to end the inning.

Outside the three-hit fourth and seventh innings, West Hills mustered only two other singles. Hallahan singled to left on the fourth pitch of the game. In a 2-1 semifinal win over Point Loma on Thursday, Hallahan led off the game with a double and scored on a single by Johnson.

Hallahan wouldn’t be so fortunate in the final. She was apparently sacrificed to second on a bunt by Valles to Barons shortstop Jaycee Carlson, but Hallahan had to return to first when the plate umpire ruled Valles had stepped in front of the batter’s box on her slap attempt. Hallahan was then doubled up on Johnson’s line-drive to the pitcher.

Hallahan might have had a perfect 4-for-4 day, but she too was ruled out of the batter’s box on an apparent infield single in the 5th. Asked if she felt it was a bad call, Hallahan replied, “Maybe. Yeah.”

Valles led off the 6th by beating out a grounder to the pitcher. After a lineout to left by Johnson, Horne followed with a similar shot to left that Bonita Vista’s Kayla Jordan dropped. Alertly, however, Jordan picked up her miscue and threw to second in time to nab Valles.

Johnson needed only seven pitches to put away the Barons’ No. 3, 4 and 5 batters in the bottom of the 7th. That would be Jordan, with her .510 average, Celinna Cosio, who was hitting .471 with seven homers and 53 RBI (second all-time to the SDCIF record of 60 by Steele Canyon’s LORENA KLOPP in 2007), and Elliott, who was hitting .426.

Bonita Vista set an SDCIF team record with 330 runs this season, and its 377 hits is second on the list. (Note: There is a 10-run rule after five innings in softball.)

“Take nothing away from Bonita Vista,” Applebaum said. “They’re a phenomenal team.”

Asked about his team accomplishing so much this season, only to lose in the final, Carlson said, “Makes it hurt even worse.”

Said Applebaum, “I knew we’d be in the finals. We felt disrespected by being the 10th seed. We felt we were a better team than that. I knew we’d be in the championship game. The world was looking at us as underdogs, but they shouldn’t have. We can play with anyone.”

And, now they proved it, beat anyone.

Foothillers' dream rests one step away

POWAY (5-27-11) — Grossmont High earned a chance to chase away the postseason demons which have plagued the program for more than two decades.

The Grossmont Conference debuted a two-division format in 1989, when the Foothillers captured their initial SDCIF championship. Since then, the school went on to garner 12 league crowns over 23 seasons, but they've come away empty in three title game appearances.

All this can change Saturday after 6th-seeded Grossmont overcame a 2-0 setback against top-seeded Poway to gain a rematch with the Titans following a victory in Thursday's (May 26) second game at Sportsplex USA, a 7-4 pasting of Rancho Bernardo.

Senior pitcher RACHEL STALFORD tossed a pair of 7-hitters, but her 12-strikeout effort against the Broncos was the difference for Grossmont to reach the final for the first time since 1995.

"Pitching a doubleheader nowadays isn't easy, but Rachel gutted it out for us," said head coach JERRY LERUD. "And she got stronger toward the end, striking out two in both the 6th and the 7th."

Stalford challenged hitters all contest, although the Broncos won several battles with three home runs. But Grossmont countered on key hits with runners on base, especially in a wild 2nd inning.

After RB received solo homes by Madeline McIntyre and Danielle Knoetze, the Hillers answered with a 5-run rally to take the lead for keeps after AUBRIE MAY and HAYLEY KASDEN both knocked in a pair of runs.

The rally started on a one-out single to center by SARAH NICKS, followed by walks to MEGAN CRISCI and AMANDA PORTER to load the bases.

May then tied the contest with a sharp basehit to left-center, scoring Nicks and Crisci. May then stole second base to move into scoring position, as she and Porter came home when Kasden lined a basehit to center for a 4-2 advantage.

Moments later, Stalford sent a shot past the third baseman, as the ball hit the bag and rolled down the left-field line for an RBI double to bring home Kasden.

"Sure, we were down a little bit after losing to Poway , but they bounced back right away with a bunch of big hits," added Lerud.

Kasden also scored in the 4th after her single, coming around when both NICKS sisters -- senior KAITLYN and sophomore SARAH -- reached base on errors, two of five miscues suffered by Rancho Bernardo.

The Broncos moved to within 6-4 in the 5th, but the Hillers answered on an RBI single by May, bringing home KAYLA APPENZELLER, who walked, then moved into scoring position on a Porter sacrifice bunt.

May finished with three RBI, going 2-for-2 and walking twice. Kasden batted 2-for-4 and scored twice.

So far in the playoffs, Grossmont (22-10-1) has defeated four North County schools in San Pasqual, Torrey Pines, Escondido, and now Rancho Bernardo.

DIVISION II
Wolf Pack gain another CIF finals berth

© East County Sports.com
SCRIPPS RANCH (5-27-11) — The joke may be on the North County after West Hills High reached the SDCIF Division II championship game for the second straight season.

The rumor mill claims that the CIF playoff format was altered to a modified double-elimination formula following the 2008 season after top-seeded Escondido was upset by Helix, 1-0, despite allowing just one lone hit: a home run by current Cal State San Marcos standout ALYSSA DRONENBURG (the so-called "Dronenburg Rule").

So what must the "NoCo's" be feeling now after the 10th-seeded Wolf Pack became the lowest-seeded ballclub to advance to the title game after upending Point Loma, 2-1, in Thursday's (May 26) elimination contest held at Scripps Ranch High.

The Wolf Pack initially fell in the winners’ bracket final to Bonita Vista, 1-0, on an unearned run. However, by downing the Pointers, the Pack gain a rematch with the Barons in Saturday's finale, slated for UC San Diego at 4:30 p.m.

Indeed, West Hills demonstrated they are "in it to win it," as American Idol judge Randy Jackson would declare.

"We showed we're as good as any team," said centerfielder TAYLOR HALLAHAN. "We wanted to prove we're better than 10th."

Wolf Pack pitcher NOELLE JOHNSON was at the forefront in both contests.

Despite falling while throwing a 2-hitter at Bonita Vista, Johnson bounced right back to point Point Loma out the door on a 3-hitter. She was also in the middle of both rallies.

After West Hills was shutout by Bonita Vista's Jen Hartman, the Pack needed just two batters to score in the elimination game.

TAYLOR HALLAHAN opened with a leadoff double to left field, scoring when Johnson send a sharp grounder through the left side for the RBI.

" Taylor gets on and I hit her in -- we've been doing that all season," said Johnson. "We just hit and keep playing defense."

Included was a wipeout of a Point Loma suicide squeeze attempt to move even in the 2nd.

With the runner steaming home from third, the ball was popped up to first baseman JAYMEE BUSH, who then fired the ball to third baseman CORTNEY BUSH while the Pointers runner was still attempting to get off the deck while on top of home plate.

However, Point Loma got even in the 4th when an error set-up a second suicide squeeze attempt, as a bunt by Jenna Vargas brought home Katie McEachern.

However, Johnson again came through.

After the squeeze play, the junior set down the final 11 Point Loma batters, when she registered six of her eight strikeouts. Johnson also started the game-winning rally.

In the 6th, Johnson drilled a one-out double, with JENNY SHEPARD taking over as the courtesy runner. CORTNEY HORNE followed with a sharp grounder which went between the legs of the Point Loma first baseman, with Shepard rolling in with the go-ahead run and a ticket to the San Diego Section finale.

Hallahan paced West Hills by going 2-for-4 in both ballgames.

BONITA VISTA 1, WEST HILLS 0 – The Barons, the top-rated team in the San Diego Section by every poll sans one, ran their record to 34-1 after taking Thursday's (May 26) winners bracket final held at Scripps Ranch.

A double-error which found the ball flying out of bounds into the West Hills dugout allowed Bonita Vista's Hannah Flippen to score the game's lone run in the 3rd inning.

Barons pitcher Jen Hartman then took over, surviving eight Wolf Pack hits to register the shutout. The effort was aided by a solid defensive effort by third baseman Anissa Pinedo, who vacuumed all seven grounders in her direction, one to start a double play.

Pinedo also collected a shot by the catcher to pickoff a West Hills runner to end a scoring threat in the 5th.

"I've needed to do a lot of hard work to become a good third baseman," said Pinedo, a junior. "Our group of girls have been together for three years, but we only became a good team by working hard all the time."

Both Bonita Vista hits came on bunts, with Flippen reaching with one out in the 3rd. She moved to second base on a walk, then scored when a grounder by Kayla Jordan was first booted for one error, then thrown away, bouncing out of play for a free pass home.

Johnson suffered the loss despite 10 strikeouts in her six innings.

DIVISION III
Sultans' season again stopped by University City

© East County Sports.com
POWAY (5-27-11) — One of the few obstacles preventing Santana High from dominating the SDCIF Division III playoffs has been University City. On Thursday (May 26), the Centurions once again eliminated the Sultans from championship consideration.

Buoyed by a 2-run single by Jazmine Hamme in the bottom of the 6th inning, the Cents took out the two-time Grossmont Valley League champions for the third consecutive season, this time by a 2-1 count at Sportsplex USA.

In the previous two seasons, University City earned section crowns by downing Santana (12-2 in 2009, 1-0 in 2010). This time, the Sultans were handed a fourth-round exit. The Centurions later earned an opportunity to defend their title after run-ruling Cathedral Catholic, 12-2 in 5 innings, gaining a championship game berth against Ramona.

Meanwhile, Santana completes another successful season with a 25-7 overall record. The program has posted a composite 105-25-1 mark over the past four years. Only Mt. Carmel owns a recent 4-year slate that is better among large-school divisions, going 113-17-1 while capturing consecutive CIF Division II crowns from 2007-10.

Both the Sultans and Centurions loaded the bases when they dented the scoreboard, but it was UC which escaped the bigger jam.

In the 2nd, CAITLIN ARNDT and AMBER SCHISLER stroked singles, then KENDRA KUPER was hit by a pitch. MALLORY BOYD collected an RBI on a bases-loaded walk, but Cents pitcher Amanda Hansen stranded three runners thanks to a pair of strikeouts, sandwiched around a fielder's choice play at the plate.

University City, Division III's top seeds entering the postseason, saw Jillian Drogin reach on an error to open the 6th, followed by a pair of one-out walks. Hamme followed with a line single to center, as the ball evaded a diving attempt by Sultans second baseman TAYLOR BARRY.

Hansen tossed a 4-hitter to gain the victory, while Schisler allowed just three hits, but took the loss as one of the runs came unearned. The other Santana basehits were registered by AMANDA GRABLE to leadoff the 3rd, and a scratch single by Boyd in the 6th.

The last time Santana defeated UC in the playoff came in the 1007 semifinals, winning 11-6.

CIF CHAMPIONSHIPS — Third Round

Santana continues streak against local competition
Take down El Capitan for 29th straight time

© East County Sports.com
SANTEE (5-25-11) — Santana High's road through the SDCIF Division III playoffs has been anything but a stroll along the Yellow Brick Road. Instead, it's been a walk through their own familiar neighborhood by again meeting yet another Grossmont Valley League opponent.

Following a victory over GVL foe Monte Vista, the Sultans continued the unusual postseason slate mirroring the rest of the regular season with a third straight triumph over El Capitan, this time by an 8-1 count in Tuesday's (May 24) third round, elimination contest.

"El Capitan has got a pitcher (DELANIE GOURLEY) who's just as good as anyone else in the playoffs," said Sultans catcher KAYTI GRABLE. "And because she's left-handed, it could help us in the next round if we play San Dieguito, who also has a strong left-hander."

Soon afterward, Santana learned that the Mustangs were also eliminated and will instead meet top-seeded University City in the first of two must-win ballgames Thursday (May 26) at Sportsplex USA Poway in order to gain a championship game berth.

Grable, the reigning East County home run champion, capped the first of three victories needed by Santana to advance to Saturday's championship round at UC San Diego by bombing a 2-run homer in the 4th inning, expanding the Sultans' lead to 7-0 in the wire-to-wire decision.

Meanwhile, AMBER SCHISLER, another Santana sophomore, carried a shutout into the 5th while her teammates mounted an early lead.

"Every pitcher can't be at their best every day," noted Schisler. "But I have a great defense behind me and a team which can hit the ball."

Schisler struck out four batters in her 5 2/3 innings, with the one run allowed being unearned. KENDRA KUPER got out of a mild jam in the 6th with the first of her two strikeouts to close out the contest.

Santana scored twice in the 1st without the aid of a basehit, then AMANDA GRABLE lined a 2-run, pinch-hit single in the 3rd as the lead surged to 5-0.

Then in the 4th, following a one-out basehit by Kuper, Kayti Grable bombed the very next pitch just to the left of the Santana scoreboard in left-center field. She also singled home Kuper (double) in the 6th to finish with three RBI.

Meanwhile, El Capitan continues to struggle with its closest neighbor, extending a streak which began nearly a decade ago. The last Vaqueros pitcher to defeat Santana was COURTNEY BELL, in a 2-1 decision on Mar. 25, 2003. Since then, the Sultans have captured 29 straight in the series (including 25 consecutive league contests).

"We expect that to change next season," said El Cap catcher CINDY GONZALEZ. "We don't have any seniors on our team, so we'll continue to get stronger, while Santana is going to lose a bunch of seniors."

Gonzalez, a junior, paced the Vaqueros by batting 3-for-3, including a booming double to the fence in right-center field in the 2nd.

However, the team's lone run did not involve Gonzalez. Instead, ASHLEY DIETRICH reached on an error to leadoff, and was replaced at first base when TAYLOR HUNT hit into a fielder's choice.

Hunt moved along to third base on a wild pitch and stolen base. JENNA PORTER walked, then Gourley hit into another fielder's choice up the middle for the RBI. In the circle, Gourley registered 10 strikeouts.

EL CAJON (5-22-11) — The paramount playoff run by Grossmont High pitcher RACHEL STALFORD continues.

Stalford tossed her second SDCIF shutout Saturday (May 21), plus knocked in the game-winning run, powering the Foothillers past Escondido, 2-0, in Division I second round action at MacDonald Field.

Stalford finished with a 1-hitter, facing just two batters above the minimum to shutout the visiting Cougars.

The Foothillers (21-9-1) advance to Thursday's (May 26) winners bracket final, meeting top-seeded Poway (24-6).

Head coach JERRY LERUD's team needs to win just one of two potential ballgames to earn a berth in the San Diego Section championship game for the first time since 1995 (a dramatic, 23-inning setback to Serra; the longest title game in section history).

It's hard to determine which area Stalford is performing at her best.

In the circle, she's allowed just a single run in 21 innings of work, including blankings of San Pasqual and the Cougars.

At the plate, Stafford is batting a cool .750 (6-for-8) with four RBI, plus an on-base percentage of .818 (thanks to three walks) against some of the best teams in the San Diego Section.

Grossmont struck early with single runs in the 1st and 3rd innings.

AMANDA PORTER and AUBRIE MAY opened with consecutive basehits. One out later, Stalford lined a single to left-center for the quick lead.

Two innings later, May blasted a one-out double to left-center field to key a 2-for-3 outing. The shortstop is batting a solid .500 in the postseason.

Escondido recorded a second out, then faced Stalford, yet walked her. Undaunted, Grossmont senior KAITLYN NICKS stepped in with a clutch hit, whistling a sharp basehit to center to drive in Porter for a 2-run cushion.

The lone hit allowed by Stalford was a 1st-inning single by Escondido's Kayla Wartner.

Being low is a 'super' high for West Hills
Gain berth in winners bracket final vs. No. 1 Bonita Vista

SANTEE (5-22-11) — Since the CIF San Diego Section incorporated the modified, double-elimination format in fastpitch, no team seeded in double figures has ever gained a berth into the semifinals without a defeat.

But when No. 10 West Hills hosted 11th-seeded Westview in Saturday's (May 21) Division II second-round winners bracket contest, a new footnote to the SDCIF record book would be added since the introduction of the so-called "Dronenburg formula."

And both sides battled to earn the citation with several lead changes in the late innings.

Ultimately, after allowing four runs in the 6th inning to trail for the first time, West Hills bounded back with runs in the 6th and 7th innings, taking a wild 5-4 decision over the Wolverines.

"Super freshman" CORTNEY HORNE drove in the walk-off winner with a bases-loaded basehit.

"My 'super freshman' did it again for us," said Wolf Pack coach MIKE APPLEBAUM. "Cortney's a big, powerful girl who can even out-benchpress me."

When Applebaum elevated several youngsters from the bench into starting roles, West Hills started winning. Among those was ARIANA QUINTANILLA, who belted a 3-run homer in the 2nd inning.

"They all brought some enthusiasm and a work ethic to the team," added the coach. "And they seemed to settle down the team, too."

Another freshman, KATIE BYRD, started Wolf Pack rallies in the 2nd and 6th innings.

Byrd lined a one-out single, then stole second base. West Hills continued playing small ball on a slap single by SAVANNA BAGGETT, but Qunitanilla changed all that with her tape-measure shot to left-center field.

"We still can't find the ball," Applebaum noted.

Westview bounced back by taking advantage of a walk, a bloop single and an infield single to score once in the 6th. Senior third baseman Julie Pena then followed with a 3-run, go-ahead blast.

The three hits in the inning were the only ones allowed by West Hills pitcher NOELLE JOHNSON.

However, Byrd opened the Wolf Pack 6th with another single and a steal. Baggett answered with a sacrifice bunt, but when the throw to first base landed near the fence, Byrd scored the tying run.

In the 7th, West Hills should've been retired in order by Westview freshman pitcher Kaylynn Pierce, but after a leadoff out, TAYLOR HALLAHAN and Johnson both reached on errors.

HEATHER VALLES beat out a bunt for a scratch single to load the bases, followed by Horn's hot roller through the left side to earn a bye into Thursday's (May 26) winners bracket final.

Johnson recorded six strikeouts to collect the victory. West Hills advances to Thursday's winners bracket final against top-seeded and No. 1 ranked Bonita Vista (33-1).

In other Division II action, Scripps Ranch knocked out 4-time defending Division II champion Mt. Carmel.

DIVISION II
SAN MARCOS 4, STEELE CANYON 1
– The late-season surge by the Cougars ended after suffering 12 errors in their last two SDCIF contests, including seven miscues in Saturday's (May 21) elimination at the hands of the host Knights.

Steele Canyon closed to within 2-1 when pinchrunner ALYSSA MASCARI scored in the 5th inning.

The rally started when TORI YANITOR stroked a leadoff single, with Mascari reaching second base on a KALI SCHWARTZ sacrifice bunt.

COURTNEY JOHNSON was struck by a pitch, then ASHLEY BARANOV walked to load the bases, setting the stage for VANESSA KELLEMS to lift a fly ball to left for a run-scoring sacrifice fly.

However, the Cougars then committed three errors in the bottom of the 5th, allowing the Knights to jump out to a 3-run lead to effectively end Steele Canyon 's season.

San Marcos pitcher Christina Clermont finished with a 3-hitter; the only other Cougars hits was a single by Schwartz in the 7th. Clermont (18-9) struck out four.

The Knights' Kendra Lee batted 2-for-3, including a double and driving in three runs.

DIVISION III
EL CAPITAN 3, BRAWLEY 0 –
Vaqueros left-hander DELANIE GOURLEY turned in her second postseason shutout of the week, blanking the visiting Wildcats on just three hits to propel El Capitan to its deepest playoff run since 2002.

Gourley registered 13 strikeouts, giving her 42 over 20 innings in three ballgames this week. She also recorded 15 Ks against Mar Vista during her perfect game in the ballclub's postseason opener, then 14 more against Ramona. All three runs allowed this week were unearned.

"It felt good to see the girls bounce back (from the Ramona loss) and kept their focus," said head coach JOE COTA. "And playing at home helped, too."

Both halves of the Vaqueros' batting order produced run production early.

In the 2nd inning, it was the bottom part of the lineup as CINDY GONZALES walked, NICOLE BALINGER was hit by a pitch, then BREAN NOBLE walked to load the bases. KASSIE BATTAGLIA followed with a ground ball to the right side, as the Brawley second base was left with no play at the plate for a 1-0 El Capitan lead.

An inning later, the top of the order generated the offense.

Second baseman JENNA PORTER drilled an RBI triple to right-center field, bringing home TAYLOR HUNT, who stroked a lead single to center. Next up was MacKENZIE GANDY, who continued her hot hitting with a basehit to bring home Porter.

CATHEDRAL CATHOLIC 5, SANTANA 3 (9 inn.) – The Sultans were one out away from gaining a berth to the semifinals, but the 3rd-seeded Lady Dons completed a last-second rally to force and eventually win in extra innings.

In the 7th, Riley Price belted a 1-out homer to trim the deficit to 3-2. Santana recorded a second out, but Cathedral got even when Dominique Madruga singled, Milan Botte walked, then Irma Cruz doubled home Price.

Botte, the Lady Dons catcher, later slugged a 2-run homer to left-center field for the game-winning hit in the 9th.

Down 1-0, the Sultans quickly grabbed the lead in their first trip to the plate when AMANDA GRABLE pounded a 2-run homer off the top of the construction trailer in left field. The shot, which also brought home ARIEL RASMUSSON (safe on error), was Grable's 7th of the season.

With two outs in the 2nd, senior CAITLIN ARNDT belted her second home run of the season, sailing the ball over the barrier in left-center for a 3-1 advantage.

Arndt later doubled in the 9th to cap a 3-for-4 performance, but was left stranded by Cathedral pitcher Courtney Rivera. After getting hit early, the senior closed the contest with 7 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out four.

For Santana to gain a rematch with Cathedral, they must defeat El Capitan for a third time this season in Tuesday's (May 24) elimination game.

Elsewhere, San Diegutio (15-15) stayed alive by knocking out Monte Vista, 9-1, as sophomore pitcher Tonia Wu belted a double and triple for two RBI, while limiting the Monarchs (13-19) to six hits. Marissa Sacco also posted a pair of doubles to drive in a pair of runs for the host Mustangs in Solana Beach.

Sultans decade-long streak
over Monte Vista stretches to 11

SANTEE (5-21-11) — It wasn't exactly David vs. Goliath, yet the Santana Sultans were not complaining after grabbing a first-round victory in the SDCIF fastpitch championships.

The Sultans rate as one of the smallest schools in Division III (second to Clairemont), facing an opponent which has the largest enrollment in the division. However, it was also an opponent they were extremely familiar with, as Santana took down Grossmont Valley League rival Monte Vista for the third time this season, taking Friday's (May 20) 3-1 decision.

It was Santana's 11th straight victory over the Monarchs (6th over two seasons) in a stretch dating back a full decade (Monte Vista last won, 3-1, in 2001). So please excuse the Sultans for the slow start.

However, the hosts found some inspiration in sophomore shortstop ARIEL RASMUSSON, who scored a pair of go-ahead runs to lead the second seeds to a victory. All she needed to do was watch Monte Vista's defensive alignment.

"I usually try to slap the ball, but it depends on where the third baseman is," noted Rasmusson. "I felt she was too close, so I got a hold of it."

With the defender playing too close in the 3rd inning, Rasmusson instead turned on the ball, banging a 3rd-inning triple. And when AMBER SCHISLER followed with a grounder to the first baseman, Santana gained a 1-0 lead.

Monte Vista moved even in the 4th, so Rasmusson made another read of the Monarchs defense in the 5th.

"She was just a bit farther back, but it was enough room to put the ball down," noted Rasmusson, who reached on an infield single, then stole second base. "Then I just beat it out."

Two batters later, Sultans catcher KAYTI GRABLE blooped a basehit over the shortstop for a 2-1 advantage. Pinchhitter BRIDGETTE FRIES followed with an RBI basehit to right field for the insurance run.

Meanwhile, Santana pitcher KENDRA KUPER set down 11 of the final 12 Monarchs batters, earning the victory in relief following 3 1/3 shutout innings.

Designated player MALLORY BOYD went 2-for-3 for the Sultans, which advance into Saturday's (May 20) second round, hosting Cathedral Catholic at 1 p.m. The 3rd-seeded Lady Dons whipped San Dieguito, 12-2.

DIVISION I
GROSSMONT 2, TORREY PINES 1
– Two legitimate arguments haunted both of these ballclubs entering Friday's (May 20) double-elimination phase of the SDCIF fastpitch championships.

Torrey Pines plays in the rugged Palomar League and received a No. 3 seed, despite a less-than-stellar non-league schedule filled with Division III and IV opponents. On the flip side, Grossmont had yet to defeat any Palomar school, despite sharing the Grossmont Hills League title.

While the host Falcons kept searching by utilizing all three of their pitchers, the Hillers needed to look to unheralded RACHEL STALFORD. The senior scattered seven hits and contributed a solo homer to power Grossmont into the winners’ bracket.

The Hillers, the 6th-seed, gained a home game after No. 7 Escondido stunned Carlsbad, 4-0 in 8 innings, after a leadoff home run by Chloe Harmon in extra innings. Grossmont’s Saturday (May 21) game against the Cougars has been moved to 10 a.m. at the Foothillers’ MacDonald Field.

Torrey Pines starting pitcher Rachel Nasland, an all-county performer last season, tossed three shutout innings, but was lifted entering the 4th inning. That was fine with Stalford, who deposited an 0-2 pitch by Lauren Hynes over the fence in left-center field to open the scoring.

The Falcons got even in the 6th when Kelsey Bichanan scored on an RBI single by Lauren Filicia, but the Hillers immediately answered with the game-winner.

First baseman MEGAN CRISCI opened with a single to left, moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by centerfielder AMANDA PORTER.

Shortstop AUBRIE MAY, who led the East County in game-winning RBI in 2010, then delivered once again, stroking a basehit to center to bring home Crisci.

Although May was out trying to take an extra base when the relay throw was cutout, Stalford didn't allow the momentum to swing. She retired Torrey Pines thanks to catcher SARAH NICKS throwing to May to cut down a Falcons' attempt to steal second base. May also collected a hot roller, through to Crisci at first to end the ballgame.

Stalford collected two of Grossmont's seven hits. For Torrey Pines, Felicia and Emma Wong each had two of the Falcons' seven hits, including doubles by both players.

DIVISION II
WEST HILLS 4, MT. CARMEL 2 –
It's generally acknowledged that SDCIF Division II offers the deepest field among the five divisions in the San Diego Section. And Friday's (May 20) ballgames offered more proof as the visiting team came away with victories in three of the four first-round contests, including the Wolf Pack's victory over the Sundevils.

In a rematch of the 2010 championship game, which Mt. Carmel won 4-2 for its record fourth consecutive crown, West Hills turned the score around in a road triumph in Rancho Penasquitos.

After leading their respective ballclubs to the title game as 2010's season-long top-ranked teams in the county, West Hills' NOELLE JOHNSON and Mt. Carmel 's Bree Williams were both awarded a first-team berth to the All-San Diego Section team by the San Diego Hall of Champions.

But this time, Johnson turned the tables on Williams with a 7-strikeout performance, with both runs coming unearned due to errors. But the entire Wolf Pack batting contributed to the offensive attack.

Early on, both pitchers knocked in runs against their counterpart.

Trailing 1-0 following an RBI double by Williams to score Sona Babayan (walk, stolen base) in the 1st, West Hills moved even in the 3rd when TAYLOR HALLAHAN stroked a 2-out slap single, stole second base, then came home on a basehit down the left-field line by Johnson.

In the 4th, West Hills broke the contest open by registering four of the team's seven hits to produce three runs.

Consecutive leadoff hits by freshman CORTNEY HORNE (double) and KATIE BYRD (single, stolen base) placed two runners in scoring position. SAVANNA BAGGETT and ARIANA QUINTANILLA followed with back-to-back RBI singles to grab the lead, then a JAYMEE BUSH grounder to the right side pushed across another run.

The Sundevils’ other run came on a Taylor Abeyta basehit in the 6th.

Byrd, the designated player, went 2-for-3 for West Hills, which gained a surprising home game on Saturday (May 21) at 1 p.m. as the 10th-seeded Wolf Pack will entertain 11th-seeded Westview. The Wolverines also posted a second straight upset after dropping No. 3 seed Scripps Ranch, 6-2.

BONITA VISTA 11, STEELE CANYON 1 (5 inn.) – The top-seeded and No. 1 ranked Barons made short work of the visiting Cougars in taking Friday's (May 20) run-rule decision in the South Bay.

Steele Canyon utilized three different pitchers, but it was five errors which doomed them. However, among the six hits by Bonita Vista was a 2-run homer by Ruby Elliott in the 4th, then San Diego State bound Kayla Jordan invoked the run-rule in the 5th with a walkoff, 3-run homer.

Trailing 4-0, the Cougars gained their lone run in the 4th.

MICHELLE BEASLEY opened with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by twin sister GABRIELLE BEASLEY, then the red-hot hitting MOLLY HUTCHISON singled to right-center field for the RBI.

Otherwise, Barons pitcher Jennifer Hartman allowed just one other hit -- a 5th-inning basehit to GRACE KRAMER -- as the Cougars tapped the ball weakly back to Hartman all afternoon for easy plays to first base.

Steele Canyon moved to the challengers’ bracket, traveling to the North County to meet 4th-seeded San Marcos in a knockout contest at 10 a.m. Saturday (May 21).

DIVISION III
RAMONA 3, EL CAPITAN 2 –
Vaqueros pitcher DELANIE GOURLEY was four outs away from another shutout victory until an error opened the door for three unearned runs, all with two outs in the 6th inning, lifting the Lady Bulldogs past visiting El Capitan in Friday's (May 20) first round of the SDCIF Division III championship.

After Ramona moved even on an error to make it 1-all, K.K. Melgoza stroked a 2-run double for a 3-1 advantage.

El Capitan rallied back in the 7th, but fell just short.

Catcher CINDY GONZALEZ posted her second RBI of the ballgame, singling in Gourley (walk) before Ramona pitcher Julie Ward shut the door.

The Vaqueros jumped to a quick lead in their first trip to the plate as TAYLOR HUNT doubled, then scored on a Gonzalez basehit.

Gourley registered strikeouts on 14 of the Dawgs 18 outs in tossing a 3-hitter.

El Capitan falls into the challenger bracket in the double-elimination portion of the tournament, hosting Brawley on Saturday (May 21) at 10 a.m. The Wildcats fell to top-seeded University City, 10-2.

SAN CARLOS (5-20-11) — There were no complaints when Bonita Vista gained the top seed to the SDCIF Division II fastpitch championships. But the deepest field among the tournament's five divisions left several disgruntled ballclubs who believed they were seeded much too low.

"It was huge disrespect," noted West Hills pitcher NOELLE JOHNSON. "We went 14-9-1 and were seeded 10th, while Mt. Carmel went 15-9 yet were seeded second."

So Johnson took control to continue the recent winning ways of the Wolf Pack.

Along with earning the pitching victory, Johnson slugged a 2-run homer to highlight a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, lifting West Hills past 7th-seeded Patrick Henry, 9-4, in Thursday's (May 19) play-in contest.

The Pack (15-9-1), winners in six of their last seven contests, advances to Friday's double-elimination phase of the playoffs, traveling to meet the aforementioned Mt. Carmel at 3:30 p.m. in Rancho Penasquitos.

Mt. Carmel, the four-time defending Division II titlists, seemed to receive the benefit of the doubt in what was actually a sub-par season for the Sundevils. However, West Hills, which fell in last year's championship game, were surprised after they failed to receive equal consideration.

"We should have been seeded higher," added Johnson. "Now we get a chance to show how good we are."

Johnson singled and eventually scored when West Hills scored twice in the 1st inning. And when the junior belted a drive over the 207-feet sign in dead center field in the 2nd, the Wolf Pack grabbed a 5-0 advantage which later extended to 9-1 by the 6th.

"It felt so good," said Johnson on her homer. "I had been in a slump lately, so when I stepped in the box, I kept thinking to myself, 'I gotta hit it, I gotta hit it, I gotta hit it."

Johnson also stroked an RBI double in the 6th. And if her line drive out to center in the 4th had evaded the outfielder, Johnson might have completed the cycle.

Johnson also pitched four solid innings, coming out when the lead reached 7-1 in the 5th. The only run she allowed came on a VICTORIA BRETZ double in the 4th, which brought home JESSICA PING (lead walk). MELISSA EGGLESTON tossed the final three frames to earn the save.

In the 1st, Johnson stroked a one-out single and stole second base, scoring on a basehit on HEATHER VALLES. Following the same script, Valles also stole second, racing home on a basehit by designated player KATIE BYRD.

An inning later, first baseman JAYMEE BUSH gained a lead single, stole second, and came home on a single by center fielder TAYLOR HALLAHAN. Moments later, Johnson went deep.

Like Johnson, Bird finished with three RBI, capped by a 2-run single in the 5th. Johnson's third RBI came on her 6th-inning double, later scoring on an error.

For Patrick Henry, leadoff batter LEXEE HUTCHENS posted a perfect day at the plate. The freshman centerfielder went 3-for-3, then posted a sacrifice in the 7th when the Patriots scored three times.

"At least we didn't roll over and went out on a high," said Hutchens. "I was able to get on because I am a slapper, but the rest of our girls try to hit the ball hard and find a gap, but weren't being very successful because Noelle is a great pitcher."

The Patriots late rally saw JENNIFER SCHUFF reach on an error. She would score on a double by CARLY MITCHELL, who would later score on an error in the outfield on a basehit by ALEXANDRA MOOTRY.

Mootry, a senior first baseman, came home on a sharp basehit by GRACE HERNANDEZ.

EL CAJON (5-20-11) — During the high school football season, many shook their heads when Christian High, which finished dead last in the Coastal League, received a home game against a Tri-City Christian team which posted a stellar 9-1 record, albeit against lesser competition.

The final score settled the debate after Christian posted a 78-7 pasting.

So when the softball playoffs came around, Guajome Park Academy had to be disappointed when Wednesday's opener at Brengle Terrace Park in Vista was lost and unavailable for the week due to rains.

But unlike their football cousins, the Frogs maintained their winning ways, even after their SDCIF Division IV play-in game was relocated to Christian High's Dawson Field.

Extending the ballclub's winning streak to 21 straight games – the second-best in the San Diego Section behind undefeated Madison – Megan Marshall's 2-run single in the bottom of the 7th inning was enough to eliminate Christian, 4-3.

Both winning streaks will now collide when Guajome Park (21-1) travels to Madison (25-0) for Friday's opener in the double-elimination phase of the tournament.

Marshall went 2-for-4 with three RBI to pace the Frogs, which lost their season-opener to Tri-CIty Christian back in March, but haven't suffered a defeat since.

"They actually have a pretty good pitcher (in Destinee Pallotto) and their 1-through-5 batters are solid," said Patriots head coach GEORGE GENTRY. "So we were all happy when the game was moved down here."

GPA (slogan: “For a great GPA, go to GPA") scored single runs in the first two innings on RBI by Pallotto and Marshall before Christian roared back to grab the lead.

In the 4th, following a leadoff basehit by MELANIE STARK, the Patriots moved even when JEANNIE VEST slugged a 2-run homer to left field.

So when Vest, who also doubled, led off the 6th, she was walked, yet eventually scored the go-ahead run. MARY GRABOWSKI followed with a basehit, with Vest advancing to third when the ball was mishandled in center field.

Vest, a senior who went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks in her final performance for Christian, then came home on a squeeze bunt by sophomore ANAYA TOBIASON.

"It was our best defensive game of the year," added Gentry. "But we didn't do too well by stranding a ton of runners on base."

Christian finishes the season with a 7-16 overall record.

Gourley goes perfect
in CIF Division III opener

IMPERIAL BEACH (5-19-11) — The voice of the Mar Vista High scorekeeper could be overheard, saying, "We've never faced a pitcher like this before."

Over the past month, the Mariners captured seven straight ballgames, gaining a share of the South Bay League title. But they were no match for El Capitan pitcher DELANIE GOURLEY.

The University of Florida bound sophomore faced 18 Mar Vista batters – and retired them all in tossing a perfect game to lead the Vaqueros to a 10-0 decision in Wednesday's (May 18) SDCIF Division III play-in game.

Although El Capitan was seeded fifth in the 12-team pool, Mar Vista gained the home site as all league champions are awarded the opening-round privilege. However, no one told one of the umpires, who arrived in Lakeside to find no game, thus, the proceedings were delayed 45 minutes while the official hit the freeway to join all the others near the border.

The delay never stopped Gourley, who overpowered Mar Vista by registering 15 of the 18 outs on strikes.

"Delanie's been great about keeping a positive attitude all season," said El Capitan coach JOE COTA. "We've dropped a lot of 1-run games, which can cause a lot of people to go into the tank. But she never got upset and just does her thing."

Meanwhile, the Vaqueros equaled a long-standing school record by slugging four home runs. Gourley and TAYLOR HUNT each went deep in the 4th inning, but the biggest display of power came from MacKENZIE GANDY, who registered a pair of blasts for three RBI.

Following a 2-run triple by freshman MARISSA CUEVAS, scoring JENNA PORTER and Gourley (consecutive walks) in the 1st, Gandy went deep to right field to jump-start the Vaqueros to a 4-0 advantage.

Hunt and Gourley homered in the 4th for a 6-0 lead, then Gandy turned the ball around for a solo homer to left field in the 5th.

"Mar Vista tried to pitch her the other way after the first homer, so MacKenzie just went with the pitch on her second homer," noted Cota.

El Capitan (15-13) then invoked the run rule with three runs in the 6th on run-scoring basehits by CINDY GONZALEZ, junior varsity call-up C.J. MERRILL (her first varsity hit) and KASSIE BATTAGLIA.

Merrill's single scored BREAN NOBLE (walk), who was also making her varsity debut. Gourley started the late rally with a lead single, part of a 2-for-3 outing in the team's 11-hit attack.

El Capitan, which now advances to the main draw and the double-elimination portion of the Division III tournament, will next travel up the mountain to meet 4th-seeded Ramona on Friday (May 20) at 3:30 p.m.

Stalford's 2-hit shutout downs San Pasqual

© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (5-19-11) — It wasn't a ballgame of firsts for Grossmont High, but it was a long time for many of the Foothillers to remember.

"It feels good to finally move into the next round without receiving a bye," said Hillers senior pitcher RACHEL STALFORD. "It's about time."

The date was in 2008 – Stalford's freshman year – when Grossmont last advanced to the main draw of the SDCIF softball championship. And the next time will be Friday after Stalford struck out 11 batters Wednesday (May 18) in a 6-0 blanking of visiting San Pasqual in the Division I play-in game.

"It's nice to finally make it," noted Stalford, who spun a 2-hitter at the Golden Eagles. "And it all started with a great at-bat by SARAH NICKS."

Already leading 1-0, Nicks and the Hillers gained full control when the sophomore blasted her first home run of the season to left field in the 3rd inning.

"It was a 3-2 pitch that was high and inside, but not too high," said Nicks, the Grossmont catcher. "I hit it and started running, but when I saw MOLLIE (SIMPSON, the baserunner in front of her) started to jog, that's how I realized it went out."

Stalford also aided her cause by driving in a pair of runs.

In the 2nd, shortstop AUBRIE MAY doubled, moved to third base on a ground ball to the right side by HAYLEY KASDEN, then Stalford drilled a run-scoring basehit up the middle.

Grossmont (19-9-1) put away the school's first Play-In Round victory since topping Ramona some three years ago by scoring three times in the 5th.

No. 9 hitter TAYLOR WATERS and leadoff batter AMANDA PORTER opened the frame with consecutive singles. Waters took third on the hit, then Porter stole second to set the stage for the middle of the lineup.

Kasden followed with her second hit, an RBI single also to center field, chasing San Pasqual starting pitcher Brooke Langeloh. Stalford again singled to center for her second RBI, later scoring on a basehit by senior KAITLYN NICKS.

Meanwhile, except for a 6th-inning double by Julieann Johnson, the Golden Eagles (11-19-1) couldn't touch Stalford.

"Rachel and the defense are playing so well together right now," said Sarah Nicks. "So we'll be confident when we play at Torrey Pines on Friday."

Stalford agreed that the homer allowed Grossmont to seize control to make pitching so much easier.

"Sarah's hit doubles and triples all year for us," noted Stalford. "It was her turn to smash one."

STEELE CANYON 6, LA COSTA CANYON 3 – Trailing throughout Wednesday's (May 18) SDCIF Division II Play-In contest, the Cougars erupted for four runs in the 5th inning to avoid the upset bid by the visiting Mavericks.

Consecutive run-scoring hits by AMANDA HARTNETT (to tie the game), MOLLY HUTCHISON (for the lead), COURTNEY JOHNSON and KALI SCHWARTZ (double) were enough to eliminate La Costa Canyon.

Hutchison finished with a 3-for-3, two RBI outing, advancing Steele Canyon to Friday's (May 20) opening phase of the double-elimination portion of the tournament at No. 1 Bonita Vista (31-1).

In the middle of the Cougars' scoring rallies was right fielder VANESSA KELLEMS.

Following her sacrifice fly to tie the ballgame at 2-2 in the 2nd, Kellems ledoff in the 5th after LCC re-claimed the lead. Kellems stroked a basehit and stole second base, moving to third on a MICHELLE BEASLEY single. Then the parade of four straight run-scoring hits followed.

"They say hitting is contagious and it certainly was for us," said Cougars coach JULIE BOHE.

The Mavericks scored twice in the 1st, but the Cougars quickly moved even.

A Hutchison basehit in the 1st knocked in Beasley, then Kellems' sac fly in the 2nd plated ASHLEY BARANOV, who walked, stole second, then went to third on a KAYLIE AZEVEDO bunt.

Meanwhile, Johnson settled down after a rough opening inning, allowing just one run over the final six innings to collect the pitching victory.

Hartnett went 2-for-3 to bolster a 10-hit attack by the Cougars.
