San Carlos rallies for Section 6 title, earns berth in 9-11 state tournament

SAN DIEGO — San Carlos Little League will take another District 33 championship team into the Southern California tournament after a dramatic finish in the Section 6 9-11 All-Star final.

San Carlos trailed Rancho Buena Vista entering the sixth inning Monday at Encinitas Little League but rallied in the top half to take the lead.

Rancho Buena Vista answered with runs in the bottom of the inning, but San Carlos held on for a 7-6 victory and the Section 6 championship.

The title sends San Carlos to the Southern California State Tournament, the final postseason level for the 9-11 Division.

The double-elimination tournament will be hosted by District 32 and Mira Mesa Little League at Mira Mesa Park.

San Carlos opens against the Section 9 champion on Friday, July 24, at 5 p.m. on Field 7.

A victory would advance the District 33 champions to a winners-bracket game Sunday, July 26, at 2 p.m. against the winner of the Section 2-Section 4 opener and Section 1.

San Carlos is one of two San Diego-area league champions already placed in the bracket. District 42 champion Sweetwater Valley opens Thursday, July 23, at 5 p.m. against the Section 10 champion.

The state field also includes champions from Sections 1 through 10, with the championship round scheduled for Aug. 1 and an if-necessary finale Aug. 2. Most of those teams have yet to be determined.

Mission Trails eliminated from 8-10 tournament

Mission Trails Little League’s Section 6 run ended with an 8-3 loss to Rancho Buena Vista in the 8-10 Division.

The District 33 representative opened with an 11-1 loss to Point Loma before staying alive with a 9-5 victory over Poway American. Rancho Buena Vista then eliminated Mission Trails in its third tournament game.

Mission Trails also hosted the Section 6 tournament, with league volunteers operating the event throughout the weekend.
