San Carlos posts huge comeback to eliminate Rancho Buena Vista

CLAIREMONT — The San Carlos Little League 10-12 All-Stars erased a four-run deficit, forced extra innings and extended its postseason with an 8-7 victory over Rancho Buena Vista in a Section 6 elimination game Wednesday at Clairemont Hilltoppers Little League.

The District 33 champions trailed 7-3 entering the sixth inning before mounting their biggest comeback of the tournament.

Maverick Ledbetter delivered the central blow, driving a two-run double down the right-field line as San Carlos scored four times to pull even at 7-all.

With the game tied 7-7 in extra innings, Kurren Kronk-Hawley delivered the decisive hit, singling home the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh.

San Carlos protected the one-run lead in the bottom half behind winning pitcher Jack Doemeny, making Big No. 99’s hit the game-winning RBI in an 8-7 victory. Dutra finished with four strikeouts, including the final two batters of the game.

San Carlos then protected the one-run advantage in the bottom half to eliminate the District 70 champions and earn another opportunity against Scripps Ranch.

San Carlos opened the scoring in the second inning. Jameson Masuhr singled down the right-field line to bring home one run, and Connor Gingras followed with a run-scoring fielder’s choice for a 2-0 lead.

Rancho Buena Vista answered and moved ahead before Ledbetter doubled down the left-field line in the fourth, bringing San Carlos even at 3-3.

RBV regained control in the bottom half, scoring twice for a 5-3 advantage. The District 70 champions added two more runs in the fifth, including a solo home run, to stretch the margin to 7-3.

That lead did not survive San Carlos’ next trip to the plate.

Ledbetter’s second run-scoring double helped fuel the four-run sixth, setting up Kronk-Hawley’s decisive hit one inning later.

San Carlos collected 13 hits in the victory. Ledbetter led the offense by going 3-for-3 with four RBIs, while Kronk-Hawley also finished with three hits. Gingras went 2-for-3.

Derek Anning started on the mound for San Carlos and allowed one hit without surrendering a run over 1⅓ innings. He struck out one and did not issue a walk.

Rancho Buena Vista totaled 11 hits. Brock Meza recorded two of them, including a home run to center field, as RBV built its four-run lead before San Carlos’ comeback.

The victory sends San Carlos into Thursday’s Section 6 championship round against unbeaten Scripps Ranch at 5 p.m.

Scripps Ranch defeated San Carlos, 5-1, in their earlier meeting. San Carlos must win Thursday to force an if-necessary championship game Friday, with the Section 6 banner and a berth in the next stage of the Little League tournament on the line.

Rematch with Scripps Ranch

San Carlos Little League’s season ended one rally short Thursday as Scripps Ranch held on for a 3-2 victory in the Section 6 championship game at Clairemont Hilltoppers Little League.

San Carlos earned another opportunity against the unbeaten District 32 champions after losing their winners-bracket meeting, 5-1, on Monday.

Thursday’s rematch carried greater urgency: San Carlos needed a victory to force an if-necessary championship game, while Scripps Ranch could capture the Section 6 banner with one win.

Behind strong pitching, Scripps Ranch scored twice in the third inning and once in the fourth to carry a 3-0 advantage into the bottom of the sixth.

San Carlos, however, refused to let its season end quietly.

Chase Buxton singled to center with one out, and following a hit batsman, SCLL brought the tying run to the plate. Aiden Ray worked a walk to load the bases before Derek Anning singled to right field, scoring San Carlos’ first run while keeping the bases loaded.

Kurren Kronk-Hawley, whose seventh-inning single produced the game-winning RBI in Wednesday’s 8-7 elimination victory over Rancho Buena Vista, followed with a run-scoring fielder’s choice to short to cut the deficit to 3-2. Kronk-Hawley advanced to second on a wild pitch, placing the potential tying and winning runs in scoring position.

Scripps Ranch escaped with a strikeout of the final batter to end the game, completing the Section 6 championship victory and ending San Carlos’ postseason run.

The District 33 champions pushed Scripps Ranch to the final out after entering the sixth inning three runs behind, but the District 32 champions survived the comeback and advanced to the Southern California championship tournament.
