LA JOLLA – El Capitan and Hilltop participated in a scrimmage at the SDFNL Kickoff Classic at La Jolla Country Day School on Saturday night.
The preseason meeting was part of a four-game scrimmage, although the contest between the teams from the Grossmont Hills League and the Metro-South Bay League were played under game-like conditions.
El Capitan quarterback Phoenix Cates threw a long bomb to a wide-open Javier Vidalez as the fellow juniors hooked up for an 80-yard TD completion.
Later, Cates ran a bootleg to the left to score from 7 yards out.
El Capitan scored 21-0 unanswered points after the Lancers put up a couple of early scores.
Hilltop led 10-0 after one quarter after Angel Pineda scored from six yards away.

However, the Vaqueros would outscore the Lancers the rest of the way.
Fans were asked to bring canned goods to the game as part of a charity event.
