Hawks improve to 4-1 with victory over Pacific Union

EL CAJON, Calif. –Natalie Perales scored a game-high 15 points as the SDC women’s basketball team defeated Pacific Union College 50-46 on Saturday night in a non-conference bout. With the win, the Hawks improve to 4-1 on the season.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

INSIDE THE GAME:

• In the first quarter, the Pioneers came out firing rolling out to a 4-0 lead before the Hawks scored seven unanswered points for their first lead of the quarter. The two teams were at a 9-9 draw after one.

• There were a total of six tied scores in the second quarter. Natalie Perales converted on a layup attempt with 12 seconds left in the half to give the Hawks a two point lead heading into the break, 24-22.

• SDC never trailed in the third quarter and had their biggest lead of the game to the point at six when a Berika Egberuare layup gave the Hawks a 32-26 lead.

• Nine points was the largest lead the Hawks would have with 7:36 left in the game, 42-33.

• Whitney Braeutigam grabbed eight boards to go along with eight points.

• Alexa Arndt also tallied eight points and contributed six rebounds.

• Both teams brought down 42 rebounds in the game, with SDC grabbing two more offensive rebounds than the Pioneers.

• The Hawks forced 19 turnovers.

STAT OF THE GAME:

• SDC went 7-of-8 from the free throw line.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

• Their 4-1 record to start the season matches the 2013-14 season when the Hawks started 6-1.

UP NEXT: 

• SDC travels to La Sierra on Tuesday. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Hawks falls to Cal State San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos women’s basketball team shot 50 percent as the Hawks dropped to the Cougars 63-46 Saturday night in a non-conference game. Three Hawks scored a team-high seven points in the game.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

INSIDE THE GAME:

• Both teams went back in forth in the opening quarter trading buckets.

• The Hawks erased a seven point deficit with consecutive 3-pointers, bringing the score within one with 1:15 remaining in the first. SDC trailed by one after one.

• Berika Egberuare‘s free throw tied the score at 21-21 with 4:55 remaining in the half.

• The Cougars then went on a 11-4 run to end the half up seven, 32-25.

• Cal State San Marcos was relentless in the third, defeating the Hawks 16-5 in the quarter. After a free throw in the opening minutes, the Hawks were held scoreless for the next eight minutes before Natalie Perales and Whitney Braeutigam broke the streak with 1:32 remaining in the quarter.

• SDC won the fourth quarter against the Cougars, 16-15 but it was too little too late.

• The Hawks shot just 32 percent from the floor and 25 percent from beyond the arc.

• Egberuare, Abigail Vargas, and Alexa Arndt led with seven points apiece.

• Anesssa Wolfblack tallied a team-high six rebounds and added five points.

STAT OF THE GAME:

• Twenty-one of the Hawks’ 46 points came off the bench.

OUTSIDE THE BOX SCORE:  

• The Hawks have lost three straight after holding a 3-game win streak over the Cougars spanning three years.

UP NEXT: 

• SDC will have a week off and will host Biola in their GSAC opener on Dec. 5 at 5:30 p.m. at Mesa College.
