EL CAJON (12-29-15) — Ranked No. 15 in the state, the Grossmont College men’s basketball team slammed Santa Ana 84-56 in Monday’s (Dec. 28) opening round of the San Diego Mesa College Holiday Inn Mission Valley Tournament.

KAELEN MITCHELL blazed in 32 points, hitting 5 treys and 9 of 10 free throws in the process.

“He started out a little slow but then it seemed like he couldn’t miss in the second half,” said Griffins assistant coach JOHN CLARK. “He did a great job of getting to the basket.”

It was another sparkling performance for DANIEL McCOWN, who spun in a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. He also swished in four 3-pointers.

Not to be overlooked was SPENCER VERING, who pitched in a dozen points.

CORWIN FEERICK chipped in with 8 points, while MARCOS MEZA added 9 points and 6 assists.

LARRY STOKES contributed 4 points and 5 assists, while LUKE JACKSON had 3 points and 5 assists.

“Marcos isn’t a flashy player and doesn’t expect to be the mainstay of the show,” Clark said. “But he gets the job done, does whatever we need.”

Grossmont led 40-20 by halftime and that all but decided the issue.

“Even though it looked like we played runaway offense – which we did – our defense was stellar,” said Clark. “We were flying all over the place.”

The Griffins (8-4) will host Coalinga West Hills (7-5) in Tuesday’s (Dec. 29) tournament semifinals at San DiegoMesaCollege at 6 p.m.
