Daniels bands Wolf Pack together to hook Longhorns

SANTEE (2-24-16) — Five foot-10 West Hills sophomore KERRIE DANIELS had a sheepish grin on her face after the Wolf Pack toppled Rancho Buena Vista 52-39 in Tuesday’s (Feb. 23) first round of the San Diego CIF Division I playoffs.
Daniels has been primarily a supporting member of the Wolf Pack cast. On this particular evening, however, Daniels erupted to produce a career best double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds to propel West Hills into Friday’s (Feb. 26) quarterfinals at La Costa Canyon.

“I felt I was in a groove,” said Daniels, who hit 4 of 7 shots from the field and 3 of 4 free throws. “I would have to say this was one of my better games. It was my job to score off of second chances and I believe I did that.
“I’ve had better games,” she said, “but this has to be one of the best in terms of putbacks.”
Meanwhile steady MEGAN SCOTT also coined a double-double of 11 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals.
“Coach (RYAN KINSER) told us to play with a chip on our shoulder. A lot of the girls were frustrated on both sides,” said Scott, whose team was 16 of 51 from the field (31.3 percent). “We had spurts of disorder but otherwise I thought we played well overall.”
West Hills was 19 of 22 from the free throw line, including a 6-for-6 effort by VIVIAN PANELA and a 5-for-6 performance from Scott.
It seemed like the ball rolled around on the floor as much as it sailed through the air. That created a bevy of scrambles.
“I thought we were pretty aggressive,” said the 5-foot-4 Scott, who hopes to land a scholarship to Stanford. “We were willing to dive into the fray every time there was a loose ball.”
Likewise with Rancho Bueno Vista (15-14).
“We had to struggle just hitting a jumper,” said Kinser. “But we made the free throws when we had to and played great defense. It’s a win and we’ll take it. We’re able to move on and that’s what we want. That was our goal.”
