EL CAJON (3-22-16) — In bowling, a split is a bad thing.  In softball, when you split a doubleheader, it is not that bad unless by all indications you should have won both games.

The Grossmont College Griffin (19-8-1) softball team split with the top team in the State of California, the Cypress College Chargers (19-3) on Monday (Mar. 21) at Grossmont College.

The first game was all Cypress as they defeated the Griffins 11-2 in run-rule fashion.

Grossmont (ranked 7th in Southern California) came back and earned the split by holding off the Chargers 5-4 in the second game of the twin bill.

RACHEL EVERETT (Bonita Vista) went 2-for-6 on the day with two runs and three runs batted in on the day at the plate, on the day that she was named honorable mention for the PCAC Women’s athlete of the week.  AMANDA IZZO (Hemet) had three hits in the second game, SOPHIA SAHAGUN (Heritage Christian) had a pair of hits and a pair of RBI’s.

Izzo led the second game off with a single down the left field line.  A sacrifice moved her to second.  Everett brought her home with a double for a 1-0 lead.  MACKENZIE REYNOLDS (Santana) reached on an error that allowed Everett to make it a 2-0 Grossmont.  DIAMOND MEJIA (West Ranch) singled to load the bases up and chase the Chargers starting pitcher.  Sahagun walked to push across Salazar who had reached on a double for a 3-0 advantage after one inning.

The second verse was the same as the first.  Izzo led the frame off with a double this time to right field.  Everett walked after an out was recorded.  Salazar had a bunt single to load the bases.  Reynolds singled to drive in both Izzo and Everett to push the Griffin lead to 5-0 after two innings.

ASHLEY MADARA (8-4, Valhalla) made a mistake and left a fastball up to Alex Carmona for her first home run of the year and get the Chargers to within four at 5-1.

In the sixth for Cypress, the Chargers had runners on first and second with no one out.  It looked like the Chargers were one hit away from being right back in the game.  However, Madara induced a 5-3 double play and then followed that with a pop out to second to extinguish the rally.

With Cypress’ back up against the proverbial wall, they mounted a rally to make it close.  Two singles, RBI double, a sacrifice fly, and another single made the score 5-4 with two out.  The final out of the game was a lineout to ALEXIS FLORES (Calexico) who relieved Sahagun at shortstop.

“I really liked the way the team came out and hit in the first couple of innings,” Grossmont head coach Doug Hartung said.  “Rachel has continued to be a consistent hitter and Mackenzie is starting to hit the ball pretty hard for us.”

The Griffins will put their 5-3 PCAC record on the line Wednesday (Mar. 23) when Mt. San Jacinto (15-11, 5-4 PCAC) comes to town for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
