ROUNDUP: Cougars win with early surge

RANCHO SAN DIEGO (12-20-16) — The Steele Canyon Cougars edged Valley Center 5-4 in the first quarter but led 18-9 by the half in Tuesday’s (Dec. 20) non-league game in Rancho San Diego. But despite being outscored in the third and fourth quarters, the Cougars pulled out the victory 36-31.

“It got a little scary at the end, that’s for sure,” said Cougars coach PETER RUIZ. “We have some things to work on.

“We’re where we’re supposed to be at this point.”

MARIANNA MARTINEZ led the Cougars with 10 points.

Steele Canyon will next play Chula Vista on Saturday (Jan. 7, 2017) in a non-league game at 5:30 in Cougar Town.

SPRING VALLEY (Nev.) 58, MOUNT MIGUEL 56 – Mount Miguel played strong in Monday’s (Dec. 19) Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas but lost the contest at the buzzer.

CAMARA DOUGLAS paced the Matadors with a team best 26 points and 15 rebounds to go along with 4 blocks and 2 steals.

SATERA BATES poured in 23 points, while LAILA SMITH dished 10 assists.

TIAJA BENNETT grabbed 9 rebounds and 6 steals plus one assist for the Matadors.

“Douglas is playing with a lot of energy,” noted Mount Miguel coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL. “She’s been playing great.”
