EL CAJON – The Chula Vista Spartans held of host El Cajon Valley Friday night, taking a 40-20 non-league decision from the Braves.

Chula Vista’s Justin Cantwell scored a rushing touchdown on the opening drive in a defensive-oriented first quarter.

Cantwell scored a touchdown on a 10-yard catch and run in the second quarter.

The Spartans’ Darrion Hamilton’s threw a pass then ended up getting tipped by both an El Cajon Valley defender and a Chula Vista receiver before being hauled in by Kajahan Duncan for an 11-yard touchdown.

The Spartans were out to a 28-0 lead, however, the Braves’ DEANDRE KELMON threw a touchdown pass to DARREL DAVIS.

El Cajon Valley’s ISAAC BLAKE was injured while making a tackle. He would eventually be taken to the hospital in an ambulance with a neck injury just before halftime. He signaled to the crowd he was okay before being taken away.

After a 45-yard completion to Giovanni Torres, Hamilton passed to Cantwell for a 15-yard score.

El Cajon Valley had a recovery of a muffed punt in the contest.

El Cajon Valley two more touchdowns, including one on a kickoff return.

Senior MAQUEL GARNER ran well in a bigger contribution after being slowed by a knee strain over the last three weeks.

El Cajon Valley (1-5) will play at home next week in their league opener against the Mount Miguel Matadors (0-1 GVL) in a Grossmont Valley League contest.
