LA MESA – The Helix Highlanders struck first in the Grossmont Hills League race, taking a 53-35 win over Grossmont Friday night.
Helix led 31-13 at half and dominated on the boards much of the game, giving the Highlanders far more offensive chances than Grossmont.
The Highlanders are expected to be the closest contenders to perennial Grossmont League champion Mount Miguel, which also got off to a 1-0 league start on Friday.
The teams meet for the first of two games this season next Friday at the Matadors’ gym.
Helix improved to 11-4 overall, while the Grossmont fell to 7-6.
The Foothillers next game in on Tuesday at El Capitan for a non-league contest at 7:30 p.m.
West Hills and Santana on Friday night.
WEST HILLS 59, SANTANA 18 – The Wolf Pack built a 27-7 halftime lead at home to defeat their Santee city rival in the Grossmont Hills opener for both teams.
The Wolf Pack’s PAIGE EVANS had 13 points
Sophomore guard CAITLYN STAYNER added 12 points for West Hills, which improved to 6-9.
The Wolf Pack’s next league game in next Friday at Grossmont at 5:30 p.m.
Santana, which fell to 2-6 overall, will host Granite Hills in a GHL game next Friday at 5:30 p.m.
MOUNT MIGUEL 77, GRANITE HILLS 22 – The Matadors got 31 points from rising junior star guard CITALLI GURROLA to open up Grossmont Hills League play by crushing Granite Hills.
Mount Miguel, which has won 17-straight various league championships in the Grossmont Conference, are a considerable favorite to repeat once again.
Junior guard MICHELLE CORLEY added 16 points for the Lady Matadors, who remained undefeated at 15-0.
Freshman point guard SYLENA PETERSON contributed 12 points points.
Senior KANI KUBARI had 10 points for Granite Hills.
STEELE CANYON 64, GOMPERS PREP ACADEMY 15 – Steele Canyon’s young scoring duo had another nice game in a blowout win over Gompers (2-7).
Sophomore KHYLAYA BRANDY 25 points and freshman MAHKAYLAH CLINE added 20 points for the Cougars.
The Cougars got off to a smooth start, leading 18-3 after the first quarter.
“Our main focus was playing defense and cleaning up our offense,” Steele Canyon coach PETER RUIZ said. “We are looking forward to playing next week with games with Francis Parker and opening league play with El Cap.”
Steele Canyon (7-4) has an away non-league game at Francis Parker on Tuesday, January 16 at 5:30 p.m.
EL CAJON VALLEY 36, MONTE VISTA 31 – The Braves are in first place in the Grossmont Valley League after the first night of the season after knocking off the visiting Monarchs.
El Cajon Valley (7-9) will face Valhalla on the road in its next GVL game on Friday at 5:30.
Monte Vista (3-12) is off until Jan. 23 when it will face the Lady Norsemen at home at 6.
