GROSSMONT VALLEY LEAGUE

SANTANA 1, MONTE VISTA 0

Both teams came into the contest looking for a slice of first place in the Grossmont Valley League and it definitely was a contest that was up for grabs. Early on both squads went at it with the Monarchs having the edge in Sultans territory but the Sultans stopped every possession.

Defensively the Sultans were able to halt the Monarchs in their end of the field each and every time and were able to procure a couple opportunities themselves. However, each and every opportunity the Sultans had missed but not by much. Even though the opportunities were missed the Sultans finally managed one and broke through with about 2 minutes remaining in the first half when Mason Moore had a nice cross-shot that looked like it was going to be wide but the ball sailed and went into the back of the net for this third goal of the season and to give Santana a 1-0 lead which would carry over to the half.

Things in the second half got kind of heated but Sultans persevered through the craziness as the Monarchs tried to take advantage of a couple of opportunities but Sultans goalkeeper Timothy Caravero made the spectacular saves to keep the shutout.

Also contributing to the lone goal for the Sultans was Kurtis Ours who had the assist.

In the game, the Sultans took only 5 shots while Caravero only had to make 5 saves himself.

The loss for the Monarchs brings their record to 8-2-5 and 2-1 in league play and in third place. For the Sultans the victory moves their record to 10-4-5 and 2-0-1 and in sole possession of first place.

Coming into the contest the Monarchs were ranked 3rd in Division IV while the Sultans were ranked 7th in Division III.

Next up for the Monarchs is a contest on Friday with Valhalla whom the Sultans tied while the Sultans will have a bye and will travel to Lakeside to take on the El Capitan Vaqueros on Tuesday, January 30th at 4:30 p.m.
