Highlanders quiet Hillers’ title quest

LA MESA – The Helix Highlanders picked up another crucial road win in the chase for the Grossmont Hills League title as Helix held off Grossmont at the Hillers’ gym, 60-52, on Friday night.
The Scotties (16-8) won their third-straight game and improved to 5-1 in the GHL, one-game ahead in the standings still with four to play.
Grossmont’s MYKOL RODRIGUEZ made a pair of three-pointers in the first quarter as the lead changed hands a couple of times with Helix leading 13-12 at the end of one.
MAURICE HOLMES had a short basket that made it 15-12 Helix.
Green had a three-pointer to give Helix a 20-13 lead.
Green added another three with under four minutes to go in the first half.
AUSTIN ODOM had two three-pointers in the second quarter for Grossmont as the Hillers trailed just 29-26 at intermission.
In the final moments of the first half, Grossmont’s MYKI MORELAND had a steal and a basket as the Hillers trailed just 29-26 at intermission.
JAYLEN HINSON scored a basket for Helix to get the Highlanders started once again coming out of halftime.
Helix senior CARDON BAKER had an offensive rebound and putback which made it 35-26 Helix, causing Grossmont to use a time out.
Green added another three later in the third quarter.
Austin Odom made a layup that brought Grossmont to within 38-34 at the end of the third.
Helix’s BRADLEY DUNN had back-to-back field goals for Helix to make the lead 43-36 with 5:29 left.

Baker had a tip in. then Dunn added a close-range bucket that gave Helix a double-digit lead with 4:25 left in the game.
Grossmont would whittle away at that edge to eventually pull to within 50-44.
The Hillers would squeeze the lead to five at 52-47 before a final Helix surge that had the Highlanders ahead 60-47 inside two minutes.
Holmes led Helix with 20 points, while Green added 19. Dunn finished with 10 points.
Helix will host Steele Canyon on Tuesday at 6 p.m., while the Hillers will host Valhalla, also on Tuesday at 6.
