LA MESA – The Grossmont Foothillers seniors knew they were going to get most of the playing time on Senior Night Tuesday against the visiting Santana Sultans.

They also knew they were going to have to step up big time because the Foothillers are in a mad dash to qualify for the postseason.

On the surface, Grossmont looks like a playoff competitor, but in a high-quality Division 2 field, the Hillers have been left chasing one of the last spots over the past few weeks.

Grossmont led 8-4 after the first quarter and 22-14 at halftime.

MARISSA GILES scored 16 points for Grossmont, including 11 in the first half, as the Hillers won their fourth Grossmont Hills League game and improved to 11-13 overall.

“I just decided it was time to play my game and not just sit and run offenses,” Giles said. “It was time to play fast and take control.

“Also, I have been practicing getting back into my shooting slot, shooting with correct form, so that helped greatly.”

Senior JAZMINE LEE had a special night indeed, playing well and producing 10 points.

“It felt really good to go out on the court and play along with my senior teammates for one last home game,” Lee said. “We could feel the energy and knew it would be a great game.

“I’ve been trying to contrinute more towards the scoring for our team.”

Grossmont’s SARAH HENRY also contributed 10 points.

“:”This game was special because I have six seniors that have been with me since day one,” said Grossmont coach GRACE CAMPBELL. “The six seniors played a majority of the night. It was an emotional game for all of us.”

Santana was led by ZOE SHIBLEY’s 13 points. She was sharp from three in the third quarter.
