Vaqueros’ late-inning heroics stun Chieftains in Hilltop contest

Some late heroics and a hold in the bottom of the ninth propel the Vaqueros to the one run victory over the Chieftains.

With the score tied at 1-1 the game went into extra innings and would be played under international tiebreaker rules where each team would receive a runner placed at second base to start.

With one out Alexa Williams roped a double off of Chieftains pitcher Maddy Jacobs which scored Kim Garcia to give the Vaqueros a 2-1 lead, Williams would score on a single by Kylie Mead to make it 3-1.

Clairemont in the bottom of the ninth would get a run back with a single to pull within 3-2 but Mead would settle down after giving up another single and retire the final two batters.

Earlier in the contest, the Vaqueros took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Katy Hicks who led off with a single would score on an error by the catcher.  Both teams would go back and forth until the bottom of the fifth when Clairemont tied the game with a run.

For the Chieftains, Jacobs took the loss going 9 innings giving up 3 runs of which 2 were earned on 6 hits while walking 1 and striking out 8.

Mead for the Vaqueros went 9 innings for the complete-game victory, giving up 2 runs of which one was earned on 4 hits while walking 3 and striking out 4.
