LAKESIDE – El Capitan High junior DONNY GREEN had the breakout game many were expecting.

It was almost enough to help the Vaqueros out-pace the Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders on Friday night.

Green produced over 200 yards of total offense for the Vaqueros, however, the visitors held off the cowboy charge, 37-35.

The game was a windshield-wiper thriller. The score was tied at 21-all midway through third and then again, 28-all, with under ten minutes to play.

Mater Dei Catholic blocked a punt and turned it into an early score.

Vaquero senior YAPHET TOKLEY had a 75-yard touchdown tie the score at 7-all.

El Capitan took the lead on a run by WICK HAUSER from five yards out.

The Crusaders scored in the second quarter one a big play and capitalized on a pair of special teams blunders, both of which resulted in scores. The Crusaders would add the crucial safety.

Green had a 27-yard scoring reception, but Mater Dei took a one-score lead with 7:16 to go on a rushing touchdown.

The Vaqueros produced a scoring drive that concluded with a reception by senior ETHAN BURLESON.

The ensuing onside kick was recovered by Mater Dei, where it was able to end the game.

“Donny Green had a big game as did TYLER SMITH,” El Cap head coach RON BURNER said. “Wick had a great game and made some nice throws. We are just missing on a few plays, we are getting better and better.”

El Capitan (0-2) will travel to face No. 3 Madison next Friday night.
