Titans’ road trip ends in road win

LA MESA – The Poway Titans made the Grossmont High football field their own Friday night, rushing for over 350 yards and seven touchdowns in handing the Foothillers their fourth-straight loss, 51-21, in front a Homecoming crowd.
A pair of turnovers led to extra possessions in the first half and the Titans just couldn’t be stopped in the first two-plus quarters.
Although the Hillers put up two of their own TDs in the first half against a stingy Poway (4-2) defense, they found themselves down 34-14 at halftime.
Grossmont quarterback Jaime Odom passed for 227 yards and two touchdowns in the contest.
Grossmont’s BRODY SCHICKER and SKIP WALTOWER combined for 11 receptions from Odom.
Schicker scored on an 8-yard touchdown reception to close Poway’s early lead to 14-7.
However, the Titans would put three consecutive scores on the board to take a 34-7 lead.
Grossmont sophomore running back ROBERT TUCKER added a 1-yard score with 19 seconds before halftime.
THOMAS MANGUM scored a touchdown in the third quarter on a 28-yard pass from Odom.
Grossmont’s DESMOND CARTER had 106 yards of total offense, while Mangum had 84 yards from scrimmage.
“We can’t seem to find our groove right now but there is still half a season left,” said Grossmont’s leading receiver ZAK FARRIS, who missed the game with an injury suffered in the previous contest. “Our injuries have made things harder but we have people to fill those spots and we still have people returning soon.”
Foothiller junior CHRIS ALBA has 12 solo tackles, while senior JEREMY RINDER had a sack in the first half.
Grossmont’s NICHOLAS TANGALIN forced a fumble, which was recovered by junior ROBERTO DOMINGUEZ.
Grossmont (1-4) will face Valhalla on Friday night.
“I think the key to getting back on track for us is just going back to basics,” Farris said. “Our energy has been down recently, making it harder to get the momentum going our way. If we can bring the energy back up, we should start to come back up.”
