COSTA MESA (12-2-2918) – San Diego Christian College forward Henriette Gahmig scored 17 points and Hannah Myers added 16, but the Hawks fell to Vanguard University, the nation’s top-ranked NAIA program, 74-51, in Saturday’s (Dec. 1) Golden State Athletic Conference opener.

Poor shooting doomed San Diego Christian, shooting just 23.8 percent from beyond the arc, then making just 10-of-23 foul shots.

After Vanguard scored the first bucket of the game, Gahmig hit a 3-pointer 13 seconds to give the Hawks their only lead of the game. The Lions answered with a 10-0 run and later led 22-11 through the first quarter.

SDC faced an 18-point deficit with 6:55 remaining in the half but the Hawks came back to trail by only nine. Gahmig started with a 3-pointer followed by back-to-back field goals from Myers, one being a trey. Colleen Murphy added a layin with 3:03 remaining to bring the deficit to 13 and Gahmig’s jumper followed by an Erica McCarter jumper brought the score to 35-26.

However, Vanguard blew out of the gates in the third quarter, outscoring SDCC, 25-10, to seal the deal.

The Hawks (6-2 overall, 0-1 GSAC) are back on the court Tuesday (Dec. 5) as they travel to Hope International in Fullerton. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
