SANTEE – The Mount Miguel Matadors got their work on Tuesday evening in anticipation of their East County “championship” game with the Christian Patriots on Saturday in the featured game of the 12th annual MLK event.

The Matadors dispatched West Hills, 71-22, behind 23 points from sophomore star SYLENA PETERSON.

Peterson also had six assists, six steals and five rebounds.

Mount Miguel senior LALLI GURROLA kept up her hot hand, hitting a trio of three-pointers on the way to 13 points. She also made four steals.

The Matadors finished with 10 points – MICHELLE CORLEY, TIAJA BENNETT and NYSSA MAGA – as all three players tickled the twine with at least one three-ball.

Bennett had five rebounds and five steals. Maga and Corley hit twice from downtown.

West Hills was led by ANASTASIA TIMOTHY’s six points and CAITLYN STAYNER’s five points.

The matchup with the Patriots features two of the top four teams in the county.

Mount Miguel (13-5, 3-0 Grossmont Hills League) sat atop the media rankings entering this week, while Christian moved to the top of the major independent poll following its win at Cathedral Catholic last week.

While the 7:30 contest on Saturday is highly-anticipated, it is no means and end all to this potential rivalry this season.

The squads could meet in the Open Division playoffs, as well, and quite possibly, in a semifinal or finals matchup.

CHRISTIAN 79, SCRIPPS RANCH 43 – The Patriots improved to 4-0 in the Western League by beating the Falcons at Ryan Athletic Center Tuesday afternoon.

Christian (13-5) got 20 points from junior ALLIE CARREON and 16 from junior AMAYA HOWARD.

Also finishing in double figures for the Patriots were senior SIMONE JAMES (14 points) and sophomore KRISTIN WILLIAMS (12 points).

The Patriots led 36-19 at halftime.

Christian High, meanwhile, has a league game before the big showdown. The Pats host the Serra Conquistadors on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Ryan Center.
