Helix takes over Hills League gyms as own

2019 EAST COUNTY PREP BOYS BASKETBALL

EastCountySports.com staff report

SPRING VALLEY – The Helix Highlanders defeated the Steele Canyon Cougars, 67-55, in a key Grossmont Hills League contest on Monday evening.

The league-leading Highlanders have become a huge story – all of a sudden – considering their all-road schedule this season and their earlier league win over Mount Miguel and splitting the season series with the now-third place Cougars.

Helix improved to 5-1 in the Grossmont Hills League with Mount Miguel (3-1) still tied in the loss column. The two teams reportedly will meet on the final night of the regular season.

It’s been a rough-road to be sure, not just playing all their contests away from campus, but also having to commute to another site to conduct practices, often sharing practice time and facilities with the school’s other basketball teams.

But for all their work, the vast bulk of the lineup will get to be the first boys basketball team to play in the refurbished gym. Several had big roles in the win.

Junior MAURICE HOLMES scored 21 points for the Highlanders.

Junior guard JADYN JAMES added 15 points for Helix

Highlander junior JAHARI HILL contributed 13 points

SAMMY STEWART, another Helix junior, came home with 11 points.

The Cougars’ GRANT CHILDS wasn’t shy from the big-game spotlight, finishing with 28 points, including three of his six three-pointers in the first quarter.

Childs, a senior, had another pair of three-balls in the fourth quarter, as did sophomore teammate JOEY CLEAVES.

Steele Canyon’s FRED MURRAY, a junior, also had a pair of three-pointers in the first half.
