EL CAJON (4-9-2019) – The problem with making up rainout is they ultimately are played during the league schedules, leaving ballclubs to go with rarely-used pitchers to save their best fort pennant races.

Such was the case Monday (Apr. 8), as both seventh-ranked Grossmont and El Cajon Valley are soundly defeated in look-ahead situations.

SCRIPPS RANCH 16, GROSSMONT 7: At El Cajon, total hits were almost even, but four errors by the Foothillers opened the doors to an array of unearned runs, as the bottom of the Western League-leading Falcons (10-7)  batting card benefitted, as No. 7 hitter Will Van Duren went 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored, followed by No. 8 guy Gavin Hunter, who went 2-for-4 with four RBI on a grand slam.

Hunter’s slam came in the 2nd, while Van Duren also went deep, as Scripps Ranch (10-7 overall) jumped to sixth in the power rankings, just a step behind No. 5 Helix.

For Grossmont (11-8), Luke Johnson smacked a pinch-hit home run to open the 7th in a bid for additional playing time.

MORSE 13, EL CAJON VALLEY 6: At Skyline District, following a 3-6 start, the host Tigers (10-6) captured their seventh straight to down the Braves in Monday’s (ASpr. 8) non-league. It’s the best start to a season for Morse since 2015.
Junior V and freshman Michael Chapman both homered for Morse to lead a 15-hit attack. Adding two doubles each were senior Lawrence Nelson and sophomore Josh Dacurro.
For ECVHS (2-10-1), Aaron Rodriguez (2-forf-4) ripped an RBI double, while Robert Verdugo also doubled. Both are seniors.
