EL CAJON – The El Cajon Valley Braves hosted the Mount Miguel Matadors in a Week 9 Grossmont Valley League matchup, but it was the Matadors’ Jahiem Allen-Pompey and his three touchdown receptions that helped the visitors take a 49-7 win on Friday night.
El Cajon won the toss and chose to defer giving the Matadors an early possession. The Matadors came out strong and this ended up setting the tone for most of the game.
The Matadors had a four-minute possession to start the game off, as senior wide receiver Jahiem Allen-Pompey had a big catch to set up the Matadors inside the 10 for them to capitalize and make the score 7-0 with eight minutes left in the first quarter on a 1-yard run by junior quarterback J.D. Laverdiere.
The Braves returned the kick out to the 50-yard line. This effort was fierce but not enough to scare away the Matador defense to ensure that the Matadors run this game.
The Matadors forced a turnover on downs only to let Allen-Pompey drive down the field and get another Mount Miguel touchdown on a throw from Laverdiere from 16 yards out.
The Matadors defense kept the vibe alive by forcing a three-and-out to let Allen-Pompey get the ball in his hands once more on a 43-yard post route for his second touchdown of the night, making it 21-0 at halftime.
“This was a great win for us moving forward,” Allen-Pompey said. “We have to look forward and see what we need to do to get back in the playoff picture.”
Allen-Pompey had reached the 1,000-yard feat a game ago. He is among the nation’s top receivers in receiving yards and is on pace to beat the section record for receiving yards in a season, although he may require one or more postseason games to do it.
“It was a great feeling to be recognized for my achievements,” Allen-Pompey said. “Now, I am trying to get after the record.”
After another touchdown by Allen-Pompey from 15 yards and following Ruben Hernandez’s 18-yard touchdown on a short pass from Laverdiere, the Braves wanted to give the Mount a run for their money in the third quarter.
After the Braves’ first three-and-out against the Matadors, sophomore running back Dai’von Kow ran in a 40-yard touchdown run to make the score 35-7.
When the Matadors had gotten the ball back. Laverdiere ran in his second touchdown, this one from four yards out.
Anthony Mitchell had a 7-yard rushing touchdown for the Matadors.
