Eagles’ season ends at La Costa Canyon

Granite Hills, the No. 11 seed, finished the season with a 5-6 record.

After a scoreless first quarter, Eagle junior Austin Smith recorded an interception early in the second quarter.

The Mavericks, however, also recorded an interception, which was followed by a 5-yard touchdown run for an 8-0 lead.

In the second quarter, the Mavericks converted a turnover and scored on a 30-yard touchdown pass for a 15-0 lead, which would be extended to 18-0 n the third quarter.

The Mavs had another interception in the fourth quarter, which led to a 75-yard touchdown run to put LCC ahead 25-0.

Later in the fourth, Granite Hills junior quarterback Justus McComb had a 7-yard keeper for a touchdown, pulling back a ball, and taking off up the middle behind juniors Dimitri Fuente and Stanley Earley, and sophomore Tanner Vielguth.

McComb also ran in the two-point conversion, making it a three-score game.

McComb then passed to James Johnson for a miraculous 52-yard touchdown, in which Johnson somehow escaped a gang-tackle, leaving Mavs crashing into one another.

The score was followed by a two-point conversion from McComb to freshman Jaylen Hall to draw to within nine.

McComb had 389 yards of total offense in the contest.
