SANTEE – San Diego Christian College left fielder Ashley Rivera had been held hitless in just two ballgames all season. But when Simpson University limited her to just a bloop single in the first game of Monday’s (Mar.1) non-conference softball doubleheader, the junior from Chula Vista did something about it in Game 2.

Rivera erupted for a three-run homer in the first inning of Game 2, giving the Hawks a quick advantage en route to a 6-4 triumph over the Redhawks. Simpson (8-8 overall) took the opener, 2-0, to open its seven-game, Southern California road trip.

San Diego Christian (7-3) saw Heather Springs accept a leadoff walk, followed by a bunt single from freshman Lisette Mejias. Two outs later, Davis cleared the center field fence at Sportsplex USA for the second time in a week, propelling the Hawks to a 3-0 cushion. BOXSCORE

SDCC then added three additional markers in the second.  Springs struck for a run-scoring single, then Keelee Davis of Chula Vista followed with a two-out, 2-run single down the right-field line.

In Game 1, Simpson senior pitcher Sydney Moorhead tossed a 4-hit shutout. She struck out 8 batters and walked just one.

Among the Redhawks’ runs, one was scored by right fielder Gentry Hoffman, a product of Steele Canyon High, after she walked.

San Diego Christian next hosts former Golden State Athletic Conference rival Azusa Pacific, which is now an NCAA Division I program, on Tue., Mar. 9 at noon, also at Sportsplex USA.
