Sultans make quick work versus Vaqs

SANTANA 42, EL CAPITAN 7

SANTEE – Recipe for a successful game plan: sprinkle in two touchdowns before the other team runs a play.
It worked deliciously for Santana in Friday night’s 42-7 win over El Capitan.
The Sultans actually punted after their first series, but the ball hit an El Cap player on the drop, and Logan Ellis recovered for Santana.
A few plays later, Drew Temple notched the first of four TD passes to give Santana a 7-0 lead.
On the ensuing kick, Santana coach Tim Estes had JV kicker Jackson Scott force one into the front line to avoid the dangerous return guys for El Capitan. A deflection occurred and Scott was able to recover it for Santana.
A few plays later, Temple again threw a touchdown and it was 14-0 before El Capitan had a chance to snap.
“We had a couple of lucky breaks,” Estes said. “(El Capitan coach) Ron Burner does a great job over there. I think they’re a much better team than their record shows (0-3). They’ve had some tough breaks.”
El Capitan’s Savigon Yokley scored on a 15-yard misdirection keeper, but Santana held a 28-7 advantage at halftime.
“He’s very athletic,” Estes spoke of Yokley. “We over pursued, and he cut back and got us.”
Two more scores by Santana (2-0) put the game away in the second half. The last time these teams met was a 42-0 El Capitan rout in 2013.
“We were pretty happy with how the kids played,” Estes said. “We played a lot of guys, and a lot of guys contributed. A lot of guys have been stepping up and making big plays.”
Temple was among them. The senior quarterback was 14-of-30 for 261 yards and 4 TDs with 1 interception.
James Beeson had 5 receptions for 124 yards. Jared Forster had another big game with 5 catches for 99 yards and 3 TDs. Shawn Martin added 2 receptions for 30 yards and a score.

Forster and Beeson each also had an interception. Michael Richter posted 9 tackles, a sack and a blocked punt. Nathan Devely had a fumble recover and return of 18 yards.

Anthony Santiago had 2 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. Logan Jordan added 6 tackles and Andrew Petersen 4.
Kayvion Jones rushed 10 times for 30 yards and a TD, and Temple added another rushing TD.
In a Grossmont Valley League battle of unbeatens, Santana travels to Mount Miguel (2-0) next Friday night. In a battle of winless squads, El Capitan plays host to West Hills (0-2) on Friday
