LAKESIDE – The Monte Vista Monarchs had to be wary on their trip to play the El Capitan Vaqueros on Tuesday evening.

While both teams have struggled in the win column, it was the Vaqueros who were still searching for win No. 1

The Monarchs didn’t take the bait, coming out strong and rolling to an 83-58 Grossmont Valley League victory.

Monte Vista improved to 2-1 in league play with its fourth win of the season.

Armando Rasing made four three-pointers, including two in the first quarter, on the way to 16 points for Monte Vista.

Veteran Brandon Tully was back in force for the Monarchs, knocking down three three-pointers on the way to 15 points.

Isaiah Hilke continued his good play with 12 points and six rebounds for the Monarchs, who scored 48 points in the first half.

Cameron McKan finished with eight points and six rebounds for the Monarchs.

Jayden Richardson and Marco Bahlin also found the twine from three in the second half for MVHS.

R.J. Lugtu led the Vaqueros with 18 points, while teammate Daisean Desinor finished with 16 points.

The Vaqueros dropped to 0-2 in league play and will host Mount Miguel on Friday night for Senior Night at 7.

HELIX 75, GRANITE HILLS 55 – The Highlanders picked up their second Grossmont Hills League win by defeating the Eagles on the road in what was an anticipated matchup in the league title chase.

Helix improved to 9-6 overall and 2-1 in the GHL by pulling off the mild upset, but maybe more surprising was the margin of victory, which was established completely in the second half.

Granite Hills (9-2) fell to 1-1 in the GHL.

The Eagles scored the first two buckets of the game and trailed by one with one minute left to play in the first half, although Helix had built a short lead during the first half.

Senior guard Ethan Jordan knocked down a three-pointer in the final minute to give Granite a 26-24 lead.

Then, moments later, Eagle junior Tre Edmond knocked down a deep three that seemingly left his hand with under three seconds to play and finally went through as time was expiring in a brilliant buzzer-beater to end the half with Granite Hills ahead, 29-24.

But that only seemed to light a fire under the Highlanders, who ended up opening the second half by scoring the first 19 points until the Eagles the drought with their first bucket with 2:20 left in the period.

Helix eventually led by 20 points or more with four minutes left in the game.

CATHEDRAL CATHOLIC 76, CHRISTIAN 25 – The second-ranked Dons won the Western League matchup, sending the Patriots to an 0-3 league mark.

Isaiah Givens made two three-pointers for the Patriots.

The Pats’ L.D. Willis had a three-pointer in the first quarter.

Junior Nelson had a trey in the second quarter for Christian High.

LA JOLLA COUNTRY DAY 60, FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 49 – The Torreys handled the Knights in the Coastal League matchup.

The Knights turned in a pretty good performance considering their season trajectory with matching 14-point efforts from the Carter-Hollinger brothers – senior Darrien and sophomore Derrius.

The Knights trailed just 38-35 through three quarters.

LIBERTY 70, O’FARRELL 48 – The Lions rolled the Falcons after leading 35-24 at halftime and moved to 3-0 in the Summit League standings.
