Vaqueros, Patriots slug way to triumphs

LAKESIDE – Two El Capitan pitchers Brooke Horn and Alyssa Fierro would combine on a five-inning one-hit shutout in the 10-0 victory over the Mount Miguel Matadors in Valley League action on Wednesday (May 12) afternoon.
The Vaqueros opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Siana San Vicente (2-4, 2 R, RBI) drove in Hailey Mulligan (1-2, R, 3B) who led off with a triple, a couple of batters later Maddie Taylor (2-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 2B, SB) doubled in San Vicente and Ava Gall (1-1, 2 R, RBI, 2B) advanced to third, she would tag up and score on a Brooklyn Fukushima (1-2, 2 R, RBI) sacrifice fly.
With Taylor on second base up stepped Katy Hicks (2-2, R, RBI, 2 2B, SB) who drew a walk, Taylor would steal third and score on an error and Hicks would steal second base. The Vaqueros now led 4-0 with Horn at-bat. She would rope a double to center field that would bring in Hicks to make it 5-0.
An RBI double by Gall that brought in San Vicente which was followed by Taylor doubling to center field bringing in Gall which gave the Vaqueros a 7-0 lead. El Capitan would add another run when Hicks ripped a double that scored Taylor and Horn grounding out that allowed Fukushima to plate which made it 9-0.
The final run for the Vaqueros came in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of a base hit by JoJo Christiaens (1-1, RBI) that brought home Fukushima.
Fierro in the top of the fifth inning would retire the Matadors in order including a pair of strikeouts to end the game via run rule.
Mount Miguel’s only hit of the day came in the top of the third inning when Sami Jelowdar led off with a single.
Kylie Perkins took the loss for the Matadors as she allowed nine runs on nine hits in her three innings of work. She also walked five on the day.
Horn started for the Vaqueros and picked up the win as she went three innings in which she allowed one hit while striking out four, Fierro came in relief and tossed two shutout innings and struck out two.
Christian 15, Madison 5
EL CAJON – A big seven-run fifth inning for the Christian Patriots (1-15, 1-2 CL) helped propel them to the convincing win over Madison (3-8, 0-2 CL) in City League action on Wednesday (May 12) at Dawson Field.
The Patriots who trailed 1-0 early on would erase the deficit with an RBI double by Devyn Krystek (3-4, 3 R, 2 RBI, 2 2B) that scored Rachel Stephens (3-5, 3 R, RBI, SB) and was followed by a two-run home run by Kate Manes (2-3, 3 R, 3 RBI, HR) over the center-field fence to extend the lead to 3-1. Also, scoring on the home run was Krystek.
Christian would extend their lead in the bottom of the second inning when Manes grounded out but on the play, Giselle Comenero (1-4, 2 R) raced home to make it 4-1, a couple of batters later Stephens would score on a groundout by Dawnelle Mcleod (1-4, R, 2 RBI) to make it 5-1.
Madison would pull within 5-3 in the top of the fourth inning when Alayna Quantrell drove in a pair of runs.
Allyson Moody (2-3, 2 R, 3 RBI, HR) though would help Christian get a run back with a base hit to score Krystek.
Another couple of runs by Madison in the top of the fifth inning would make it a 6-5 ballgame.
But in the bottom of the inning the Patriots and their bats really came alive starting with an RBI single by Stephens, she would steal second and score when Krystek doubled to left field which made it 9-5, later an RBI single by Mcleod made it 10-5, the next batter Chloe Hessom (1-4, RBI) singled in Manes to make it 11-5.
With two-outs both Mcleod and Moody would come into score when Allison Van Der Zalm (1-2, 2 RBI) laced a base hit to left field which made it 13-5.
Christian would round out their scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning when Moody took a 2-1 offering and blasted it over the center-field fence for a two-run home run. Also, scoring on the dinger was Manes.
Stella Destino in the loss for Madison allowed 15 runs on 15 hits over five and two-thirds innings in which she walked five and struck out four.
Manes would pick up the win for the Patriots. She allowed three runs on five hits over four innings of work while walking three and striking out three, Moody came into the game and tossed two innings of relief and picked up the save. She allowed two runs on three hits while walking two and striking out two.
