Wilson drives in four in Cougars’ victory

SPRING VALLEY – The Steele Canyon Cougars (12-9, 4-1 GHL) pounded out fourteen hits including three by Janea Wilson (3-3, 2 R, 4 RBI, 2B, HR) who drove in four runs in the 12-7 victory over Grossmont (6-12, 2-3 GHL) on Wednesday (May 19).

Early on thought the Foothillers would take a 2-0 lead when Jade Daley (1-3, 3 R, 2 RBI, HR) belted a two-out two-run home run over the center-field fence that also scored Natalie Emery (RUN).

Steele Canyon would answer in the bottom of the first inning when Breanna Lakin (2-4, R, RBI) drove in Kassandra Jaggard (2 R) to make it 2-1, a couple of batters later Mariah Mata (1-3, R, 3 RBI, 2B) roped a double to center field that scored both Wilson, Lakin and Marley Rimoldi (1-3, R) which gave them a 4-2 lead. The next batter Kamea Seunanne (2-3, RBI) would drive in Mata on a single to left field to make it 5-2.

The Cougars would add to their lead in the bottom of the second inning on a sacrifice by Tayler Thomas (2-3, R, RBI) which would bring home Jazmin Williams (3-5, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2B, HR) who was able to score from second base.

Despite trailing 6-2 the Foothillers went to business in the top of the third inning as Alyssa Bolden (2-3, R, RBI) drove in Katelynn Parent (2-4, R), Alexis Fleischer (2-4, RBI) followed with a base hit that scored Daley, and Sunny Miller (1-3, 2 RBI)was able to get down a sacrifice that allowed Bolden to score which made it 6-5.

After both teams went back and forth the Cougars were able to breakthrough in the bottom of the fourth inning with a pair of runs.

Lakin came to the plate with runners on and two outs and hit a ball to right field that was unfortunately misplayed and rolled all the way to the wall allowing both Jaggard and Wilson to score to make it 8-5.

Grossmont would threaten in the top of the fifth inning when Parent and Bolden each had base hits. However, both would be stranded as Emma Shellstrom was able to get out of the inning as she retired the next two batters on pop-up outs.

Steele Canyon would add to their lead in the bottom of the inning when Williams hit a no-doubter over the center field fence that scored Isabella Smith (RUN) to give them a 10-5 lead. They would add another couple of runs later in the inning when Wilson roped a double to right field that brought home both Thomas and Allyson Haessly (RUN) to make it 12-5.

Grossmont scratched a run across in the top of the sixth inning on a base hit by Bond that scored Caitlyn Potts to cut the deficit in half 12-6.

They would threaten in the top of the seventh inning with one out when Daley reached on an error, she would advance to second on the same error, Bolden followed with a walk, both Bolden and Daley would move up on a ground ball out. With two outs Sunny Miller came up and laced a single to left field to bring in Daley to make it 12-7 and advance Bolden to third base. Davina Moya who came into the game in the sixth inning was able to thwart any more damage as she induced a ground ball out to end the game.

For the Foothillers, Fleischer took the loss as she allowed 12 runs on 14 hits over six innings of work, she also walked three and struck out three on the day.

On the other side for the Cougars, Shellstrom garnered the win as she went five innings in which she allowed five runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out four, Moya came in and tossed two innings of relief to finish things out allowing only one hit and striking out one.
