LAKESIDE —- As the precise moment that the San Diego Padres were trailing 8-0 to the Washington Nationals on Thursday (July 8) night, the San Diego Stars were also down by an identical margin in Western Baseball Association action.

While the Padres battled back to register the greatest come-from-behind victory in the majors this season, the Stars came close, then didn’t.

After rallying back to move to within 9-7 at El Capitan High’s Hostetler Field, the North County Gorillas of San Marcos saw the offense get back into gear, taking an 18-8 decision.

The Gorillas pounded out a season-best 20 hits, while the Stars heavily contributed to their downfall with an unsightly nine errors, plus five walks and a pair of hits batters, leading to 36 base-runners. Half of which scored.

The Stars rally included a pair of 2-runs homers by Cody Castro and Joey Krug in the third inning to halve the deficit to 8-4.

In the fifth, Krug (sacrifice fly) and Henry Gonzales (double) also produced RBI to trim the margin to two, but North County added nine additional runs over the final three frames, capped by a 3-run homer to left field by Jackson Garrett.

The Stars return home for a Saturday doubleheader against the San Diego (Poway) Crush, starting at noon.
