ESCONDIDO – The Mountain Empire RedHawks got defensive in the fourth quarter and defeated Escondido Adventist Academy, 45-38, in a non-league game on Thursday.

Mountain Empire and Escondido Adventist were close throughout until the final quarter.

After a 12-all first quarter, the Red Hawks led 20-19 at halftime. Little had been decided after three quarters, as well, with the game tied once again, this time at 30-all.

The RedHawks were led by senior Albin Acevedo, who scored 18 points, including eight in the fourth quarter. He was 4-for-4 from the line in the fourth and made a three-pointer in the third period.

Mountain Empire (4-3) also got 10 points from Nikai Lindholm, including a three-pointer in the third quarter.

The RedHawks’ Corey Vann had a pair of three-pointers, including one in the fourth quarter.

Senior Alejandro Adkins had a three-pointer in the first quarter for MEHS.

It was a good turnaround for the RedHawks, who fell to Del Lago Academy, 50-43, on Tuesday at Greenfield Middle School.

“We all played hard (against Del Lago),” Mountain Empire’s Lukas Spencer said. “We just needed to land more shots and we could’ve won it. We just need to practice sticking to the player we are guarding and communicate more.”

Spencer had 11 against DLA, as did Acevedo, but the RedHawks couldn’t overcome a 16-6 start by Del Lago in that one.

Junior Alvaro Martinez had a three-pointer for the RedHawks in Tuesday’s loss.

The RedHawks trailed just 38-35 entering the fourth but couldn’t quite finish the rally.

EL CAPITAN 58, MAR VISTA 54 – The Vaqueros won again, this time on the road against the host Mariners, on Wednesday night.

Daisean Desinor was explosive and too much to guard for the Mariners. He scored 31 points in the contest.

Meanwhile, senior Trevor Moklestad added 19 points, as the duo combined for 50 of the team’s 58 points.

Jake Archer and Desinor both had a three-pointer for the Vaqueros.

Desinor added 10 rebounds, three assists, and a steal, while Mokelstad grabbed 11 boards and blocked six shots.

The Vaqueros improve to 5-4 on the season.

Next up for El Capitan is a matchup versus Granite Hills at home next Monday night. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.

STEELE CANYON 74, FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 59 – The Cougars knocked off the Knights despite three Foothills Christian players scoring in double figures.

Senior Joseph Hankins scored 22 points, senior Nick Hadge had 18 points, and sophomore Josh Nafarrete finished with 15 points for the Knights.

Steele Canyon improved to 4-4 overall.
