Hawks return after road win, no-hitter

GLENDALE, Ariz. — The San Diego Christian College women’s softball team forged their way back into the olden State Athletic Conference pennant race after gaining an important road split of a doubleheader against Arizona Christian College — but they barely did so. Following a 6-2 setback in the opnever, the Hawks bounced back for 1 5-4 decision in 10 innings.

SDCC scored three times under the International Tiebreaker,but ACU made it interesting by scoring twice before the Hawks closed out the triumph.

Hawks pitcher Gizel Mendez, a transfer from Folsom Lake College east of Sacramento, survived a pair of unearned runs in the 10th (the first ITB run is always unearned), She escaped on a pair of shallow fly balls to the outfield.

The Hawks took the lead on consecutive bunts.

With Maya Abrego placed on the bag at second, Lisette Mejias advanced her to third. However, Alicia Corona also bunted on a squeeze tp take the lead.

Later, an error set up RBI singles from Noemi Farfan and Marley Rimoldi.

The win was the first for the Hawks since Amaryssa Medina fired a no-hitter to stop University of Antelope Valley, 1-0, on March 7.

Medina aslo collected the game-winning RBI on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth. Medina, a senior from West Sacramento, struck out 12 Pioneers batters.

The Hawks return home for a doubleheader on Monday (Mar. 14) against Claremont-Mudd, starting at 11 a.m. from SportsPlex USA in Santee.
