Improving Hawks gain twinbill split

ROCKLIN — How ironic. On a day when every East County based high school baseball team lost, thr struggling San Diego Christian College baseball tram came out on top.
Of course, they needed to go nine innings to do it, yet the Hawks will gladly accept their Golden State Athletic Conference double-header split with William Jessup University.
The host Warriors took the opener, 6-5, but the Hawks recovered to take a 14-10 slug-fest in extra innings in Friday’s (Mar. 18 action.
Game highlights supplied by SDCC:
GAME 1
Alec Arnone, got the Hawks offense going with a leadoff double in the top of the second. Senior, Ryan Lystlund, would drive courtesy runner, Cade Cabral in with a single to center. He would then score himself on the same play on an error by the centerfielder. Jessup would answer with two of their own in the bottom of the inning.
Arnone would lead off the fourth with another double. Lystlund would drive in Cabral yet again but this time with a towering, two-run homer to left field. WJU would once again match the total in the bottom half.
The Warriors would go up by a run in the fifth, but the Hawks would even things up again in the sixth when Kennedy Chun drove in Cabral (running again for Arnone who was hit with a pitch) with a single.
An unearned run in the bottom of the fifth would put the scoreline in Jessup’s favor and ultimately decide the game.
GAME 2
After going down by seven runs early in game two of the doubleheader, a huge comeback would begin for the Hawks in the fifth inning. San Diego Christian would grind out five runs to pull SDCC back into within two runs.Jessup thought they had stifled the SDCC momentum when they added two more runs in the sixth to take back a 4-run lead. They were wrong.
The inspired Hawks would answer with four runs in the seventh. An Aaron Hoch double would plate the first run, and SDCC’s beast, Alec Arnone would drive in two more with a single to center. An Anthony Macchia double would then drive in Arnone to pull the game even at 10-10.
San Diego Christian’s closer, Chandler DeJong, would enter the game in the bottom of the inning and completely shut down the Jessup bats for the rest of the game. After a fruitless eighth for both teams, SDCC would open it up in the ninth.
Once again, Arnone would spark the Hawks offense with a leadoff single. Anthony Macchia would drive in Ryan Lystlund, who reached on a fielder’s choice for the game-winning run, but SDCC would continue to pile on. Trevor Baker would single to drive in Kennedy Chun and a single by Davin Burroughs would plate 2 more.
DeJong would finish the Warriors off for the 14-10 win.
The teams’ 4-game series finished with a Saturday doubleheader, starting at 11 a.m.
