Helix’s Haar, Laub, tip Rancho Bernardo

2022 EAST COUNTY PREP BASEBALL

ECS staff report

LA MESA .— It’s hard to believe that Helix High pitcher Ben Haar, a regular member of the Scotties rotation, just cant pick-up victories. Two of his three losses were due to unearned runs or he left close ballgames with no-decisions.

However, the Highlanders played solid defense and Haar fired a complete-game shutout to stop visiting Rancho Bernardo, 2-0, in Lions Tournament action.

In a classic pitchers’ duel, the Scotties’ Wyatt Laub won the contest with a 2-run homer in the fourth inning.

For Haar, the breaks went his way for once. While spinning his 5-huit shutout, one could argue that Rancho Bernardo pitcher Brady Dockan did even better in throwing a 1-hitter.

And what a hit!

Moments after Dockan struck Haar with a 3-0 pitch, his cover hitter, Laub did what every batter is supposed to do in the situation — bash!

Laub turned on a 2-2 pitch and launched the ball into the softball diamond beyond center field for a go-ahead, 2-run homer — the lone runs in one of the top East County ballgames of the day in the opening day of the 71st annual Lions Tournament.

Haar finished by striking out seven Broncos baters against just walk. Dockan had four K’s in his six innings.
