Cuyamaca soccer draws in Palm Desert

PALM DESERT — The Cuyamaca College men’s soccer team extended its season-long winless streak (0-1-4) o five games by salvaging a 2-2 draw on the road at College of the Desert on Tuesday (Sept. 13).

The exciting, back-and-forth contest saw the Coyotes (0-4-1) grab on an early lead as Robert Somerville (Santana) tallied the first of his two goals on the afternoon,, only to watch the Roadrunners (3-2-2) battle back,

COD freshman goal keeper Luis Lucio (Palm Desert Xavier College Prep) had his hands full early as the Coyotes took an early 1-0 lead in the 6th minute.

Desert would tie the game in the 43rd minute on a goal from sophomore forward Vasilios Syrengelas (El Centro Central) who nailed a free kick from about 25 yards out to tie the game at 1-1.

In the 75th minute, the Roadrunners took a short-lived lead on a penalty kick conversion from freshman forward Jose Calderon, Jr. ( Desert Mirage).

However, Somerville’s strike for the equalizer came in the 80th minute off a pass by sophomore Dylan (Lizarazo (Valhalla).

The Roadrunners played the Coyotes for the first time in program history in 1990 and have a 9-17-7 record against the Coyotes.

With his first  pair of goals of the current campaign, Somerville now leads the Coyotes in goal-scoring.

Cuyamaca returns home on Friday, hosting the San Bernardino Valley Wolverines to start a four-game homestand, then host the  West Hills Falcons next Tuesday (Sept. 20). Both start at 4 p.m.
