Hawks women move to 2-0, douse Flames

FLETCHER HILLS — San Diego Christian College overcame to slow start to dominate the final three quarters,dousing the Flames of Bethesda University of California, 74-46, in a non-conference women’s basketball game played Thursday (Nov. 3) at Grossmont College.
The unbeaten Hawks (2-0) trailed,14-10, following the first period. However, they bounced back strong with 21 points in both the second and fourth quarters to keep expanding their lead the rest of the way.
Haylie Anderson, who led the Hawks in scoring in the season-opening win over Lincoln University (Calif.), again powered San Diego Christian with a game-best 21 points.
Anderson, a guard from Utah,also was one of three starters to grab 5 rebounds, but the Hawks leaders on the boards were forward Jamee Joseph (10) and guard Cynnadie Whatley (7). All three are seniors.
Meanwhile, sophomore guard Elaina Martinez (Denver) came off the bench to contribur 13 points and a career-high 10 assists. Joseph also added five assists, while scoring 8 points in the second period to trigger the team’s turnaround to grab the lead for keeps after SDCC tallied the first seven points of the quarter.
Bethesda (0-3), based in Anaheim, received 19 points from senior Vanessa Vargas, a senior out of Colorado Springs, who played just two games all of last season due to injury.
San Diego Christian (2-0) next travels to meet Emery-Riddle (Ariz.)in Prescott on Saturday (Nov. 5) at 2 p.m.
