Coyotes, Griffins again strike out

EL CAJON — In a famous episode of the 1950s television program “I Love Lucy” — it’s on YouTube — Lucy and Ethel are taking turns in a baseball batting cage in a friendly competition among friends to see who gets the most hits.
“Oh, give it up Lucy,” Ethel said following another swing-and-a-miss by Lucy. “I have twice as many hits as you.”
Then Ethel delivered the punchline.
“Two or one.”
The same seems true for the basketball teams –men’s and women’s — at both Grossmont and Cuyamaca community colleges after all four teams lost on Friday (Feb. 4).
Men
FLETCHER HILLS – Grossmont College, which holds a 2-1 advantage in Pacific Coast Athletic Conference wins over Cuyamaca, at least keeps on swinging. The Griffins just missed the century mark bu rolling up 98 points, but were nipped by visiting Palomar, 108-98.
The decision was a complete turnaround from the ballclubs’ initial meeting in San Marcos, when the Comets won by 40 points.
Sammy Stewart IV shot 8-for-13 from the floor in scoring a team-best 22 points. He also posted 9 rebounds and 4 assists in his quest to be selected to the all-PCAC team.
Meanwhile, a trio of Griffins came off the bench to score in double figures. Included was 12 points from guards DeAndre Allison (*5-for-7 shooting) and Amari Leflore, while Spencer Hall added 10.
For Paslomar (17-7 overall, 9-3 PCAC)), Robinson led the way with 25 points, as the Comets took the halftime lead at 64-46, clinching third place in the standings. Grossmont fell to 7-16 (2-10 PCAC).
San Diego Mesa 72, Cuyamaca 52
LINDA VISTA – Could San Diego Mesa achieve a rare above-.599 record for one of the few times in the program’s 58-year history?
The Olympians reached the break-even mark by downing visiting Cuyamaca, 72-52, on Friday (Feb. 3) by shooting (according to the school’s box score) an amazing 70.6 percent (24-34) from the floor.
What the statistic may be in question, it was another poor defensive efforts for the Coyotes(3-21 overall, 1-11 PCAC), which remain a game behind Grossmont in the standings.
Cuyamaca failed to report its game statistics. According to a pair of conference sources, some teams are refusing to post their game information on a timely basis.
One thing is for sure, Cuyamaca has posted a winning record just five times this century, the last coming in 2009-10.
Mesa (12-12, 7-5 PCAC) once went 33 season with only five winning seasons starting when the school first opened for the 1965-65 campaign.
Women
RANCHO SAN DIEGO – The last time Cuyamaca College captured a conference women’s basketball game, the opponent was San Diego City College.
On Friday (Feb. 3), the Coyotes were to again face the Knights, but instead forfeited, giving the school its 50th consecutive PCAC loss.
At least Grossmont College is trying to compete with seven bodies, some playing injured. Following a short string then the Griffins needed to forfeit a string of contests, they took the court in Imperial, Calif., but fell to Imperial Valley College.58-23.
